He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 6

Leah rushed out of her room in a panic, screaming at the top of her lungs, "Earthquake! Is it an earthquake?"

Zara, holding the wailing baby, was so terrified by the noise that she bolted out barefoot.

Rushing into the living room, the two women were utterly dumbfounded to see the usually calm and rational Scarlett violently smashing her beloved decorations onto the floor like a maniac.

Leah frantically darted forward to stop her. "Ma'am, stop smashing things! We can talk this out, ma'am!"

Rocking the incessantly crying baby, Zara called out tearfully, "Ma'am, please stop, you're scaring the baby!"

Hearing her child's heart-wrenching cries, Scarlett's body went limp, as if drained of all strength.

She finally set down the vase in her hand, stepped forward, and pulled the baby tightly into her arms.

The baby's face was beet red from crying, her tiny fists clenched tight.

Zara leaned in, urging anxiously, "She must be hungry. I made some formula, but she refused to drink it. She only wants you! Ma'am, hurry, you need to feed her!"

Without hesitation, Scarlett instinctively reached for the hem of her shirt.

But a second later, she realized something. Looking up, she caught the deeply conflicted expression in Yardley's eyes.

Over the years, he was used to seeing her as a fierce, perfectly put-together career woman. He had never seen her looking so disheveled, ready to lift her shirt and breastfeed in plain sight.

In that moment, let alone him, even she felt a wave of awkwardness.

But the baby wouldn't stop crying, and she couldn't care less. Turning her back to him, she lifted her shirt and gently guided the baby's little face to her chest.

The air instantly grew quiet, leaving only the sound of the infant nursing hungrily.

Yardley stood rooted to the spot, staring at Scarlett's back as she fed their child. His expression was complicated, his gaze dark, making it impossible to tell what was going through his mind.

Leah began silently cleaning up the mess on the floor.

Zara scooted closer, watching Scarlett feed the baby, and murmured, "Ma'am, you've really been through so much. Just to make sure the baby gets breast milk, you endured the engorgement pain and pushed through for half a month before your milk finally came in."

"Ever since she started on your milk, she's been growing better every day. Just look at those chubby little cheeks."

...

Scarlett remained silent, her heart icy cold.
