His furious voice came through the line. “Wynette, get your ass to the hospital and apologize to Lorelei. Now.”

She could faintly hear Lorelei crying in the background.

She didn’t need to guess. He was hurting for Lorelei and looking for someone to take it out on.

Without a word, she hung up.

He kept calling. Again and again. Like he wouldn’t stop until she showed up and apologized.

Irritated, Wynette blocked his number.

Finally, silence. She let out a breath.

The moment she stepped into the house, she met her mother’s dark expression.

Before she could even say hi, Kaylee Turner stormed over. “Did you upset Noah again? Wynette, didn’t I tell you to stop being so willful? Just keep him happy. Why are you still so immature?

“He just called me. He said you blocked him. Call him right now and apologize. Hurry.”

As she spoke, she reached for Wynette’s phone.

In the past, Kaylee would never have let her lower herself like this.

Before the Jewells fell, they stood on equal footing with the Shepherds.

But three years ago, her father, Ryker Jewell, made one wrong decision. The company almost went bankrupt.

He managed to save Jewell Group, but it had been barely hanging on ever since.

With Wynette at Noah’s side and the support of Shepherd Group, Jewell Group found a renewed sense of hope.

That was when their relationship quietly turned unequal.

Anytime Noah was even slightly unhappy, Kaylee would order Wynette to apologize first. Keep him pleased. Because if the Shepherds pulled their investment, the Jewells were finished.

For years, Wynette endured it. For her bedridden father. For her mother’s tears and threats.

But now she understood. No matter how low she bowed, no matter how little dignity she kept,

Noah would never look at her. Let alone cherish her.

He knew that. That was why he hurt her without restraint.

“Mom, I’m breaking up with Noah,” Wynette finally said.

She knew Kaylee wouldn’t agree.

But she couldn’t keep it to herself either. If she didn’t say it now, today’s mess would just repeat itself. So she chose to be honest.

Kaylee exploded. “What did you just say? Who said you could break up? I don’t agree. Stop joking. I told you to apologize. Go.”

She grabbed Wynette’s wrist. “I’ll go with you to the Shepherd residence. You’ll apologize in person. Make him forgive you. I told you to stop acting on impulse. Why won’t you listen?”

“Mom.” Wynette pulled her hand free. “I didn’t do anything wrong. Why should I apologize? I told you before-he doesn’t love me. I want to end this.”

She had brought up breaking up before. Every time, Kaylee cried and made a scene until she gave in.

But not this time.

Kaylee stared at her in disbelief. “Are you out of your mind? What happens if the Shepherds stop helping us? If he doesn’t care about you, why has he been dating you this long?

“He just forgot to show up at City Hall yesterday. Couldn’t you be more understanding? He had something important to do. Why are you so childish?”

So she knew. She knew he stood her up at City Hall.

And still, not even a single call to comfort her. Instead, she wanted her to apologize.

Had she done anything wrong?

Wynette looked at her calmly. “Mom, wake up. The one he loves is Lorelei. Yesterday was the third time he left me for her. I get tired too.”

Her eyes were cold. Emotionless.

She knew that even if she said all that, Kaylee would only tell her to suck it up and let it go.

And she was right.

Kaylee tapped her forehead angrily. “If you can’t keep your man, whose fault is that? I don’t care. I won’t allow you to break up.

“The Shepherds won’t even accept Lorelei, and you still can’t make him forget her and marry you? Why don’t you reflect on yourself?”

The more she spoke, the angrier she got.

The Jewells needed the Shepherds. And yet her daughter was this useless.

It was driving her insane.

Wynette almost laughed. “Mom, I—”

“Don’t call me Mom!” Kaylee shrieked. “If you still see me as your mother, then listen to me. You are not breaking up. I forbid it.

“Listen carefully, Wynette. If you break up with him and the Jewell Group collapses, I’ll die right in front of you. I’ll never forgive you for the rest of my life.”

She glared at her.

Every time Wynette mentioned breaking up, Kaylee said the same thing.

And every time, Wynette compromised.

Her head started to hurt as she looked at Kaylee’s stubborn face. Now she only felt exhausted.

In Kaylee’s eyes, her happiness meant nothing compared to the company’s survival.

Whether she would be happy marrying Noah didn’t matter.

Only the Jewell Group mattered.

They stared at each other. Neither was willing to back down.

Wynette was about to speak when Kaylee suddenly grabbed her wrist again and dragged her toward the door.

No matter what, she was taking her to apologize.

At first Wynette struggled. Then she stopped. She let herself be dragged.

They arrived at the hospital.

Standing outside the ward, Wynette looked inside. The irony deepened in her chest.
