Chapter 76 Played Them All
Wynette turned the question right back on them
Eve looked like she’d just witnessed something crawl out of a grave
Is Wymette se rattled she’s completely lost her mind? She’s asking us what to do at a time like this?
She’s absolutely lost it!
Justin couldn’t find a single trace of panic in Wynette.
Thinking back to how badly she’d just bested him, Justin felt his heart crawl right up into his throat.
Something’s wrong. Wynette’s far too calm.
Just like how she’d been certain from the very start that she could produce that money.
She’s definitely holding something back.
Sharp as Justin was, he no longer dared to dismiss Wynette the way he had before.
His gaze settled on her, bristling with wariness.
Noticing the shift in Justin, Wynette’s smile deepened. “As you aren’t planning to honor the agreement, I suppose I’ll have to find someone to get me some justice. What do you think?”
Justin was just about to ask who she thought she could possibly bring in.
The next second, his whole body locked up, and the color bled right out of his face.
Wynette’s smile warmed as she looked past Justin and Eve. “Hello, Mr. Adam.”
Justin and Eve had their backs to the entrance.
So when the Shepherds‘ patriarch walked through the door, neither of them caught it.
Even Kaylee, right there beside Wynette, hadn’t noticed the old man’s arrival.
If not for Wynette’s greeting, everyone would’ve missed him entirely. All heads snapped toward the door
at once.
Adam strode in wearing a sharp, tailored three–piece suit. A walking stick rested in his hand, but it did absolutely nothing to slow his vigorous, purposeful stride.
“Dad” Justin said, his face drained of all color
His eyes flickered and skittered, unable to hold the furious glare of his father, who’d come to stand right before him
When Eve caught sight of the patriarch, her whole body nearly gave out beneath her

Chapter 76 Played Them All
Isn’t he supposed to be resting out in the countryside? When did he get back? Are the people looking after him completely useless? He’d made it all the way back to the city and not one of them had bothered to send word.
Fnished
This mattered enormously. Adam had retired, yes, but the real power over the Shepherds still rested firmly in his hands.
Most critically of all. Adam had adored Wynette since she was a little girl.
Even Noah, his own blood grandson, didn’t rank as high in the patriarch’s heart.
If the boy weren’t her own flesh and blood, Eve would’ve suspected more than once that Wynette was the true Shepherd child.
Eve couldn’t really be blamed for the thought. Adam had simply been far too generous with his affection for Wynette.
When the Jewells fell into crisis years ago, it was Adam who’d demanded, without a single compromise, that Justin step in and help.
As his condition, Adam handed half the company’s authority to Justin and stepped back into retirement.
Though he was no longer in the city, Adam had always kept a close eye on both families.
Everything the Shepherds had done, they’d done behind the patriarch’s back.
For years, Justin had quietly worked to block Adam from learning the true state of Jewell Group.
Adam still believed Wynette and Noah were perfectly happy together, cheerfully looking forward to their wedding.
With both families now at war, the Shepherds couldn’t afford to let Adam find out. Every scrap of news had been kept from him.
And his reason for returning now…
Justin and Eve’s expressions hardened with cold venom as they both turned to look at Wynette.
It had to be Wynette who’d drawn him back to the city.
She was far more capable than they’d ever given her credit for.
Wynette felt the daggers in their stares. She didn’t spare them a second thought.
Adam’s expression was tight as he gestured for Wynette to sit.

But she’d bet right.
The whole ordeal with Noah had been Wynette’s deliberate doing, blown up large enough for Adam to hear about it and return.
Her people had told her that Adam had come straight to the Jewells‘ the moment he arrived.
Wynette had originally planned that if today’s talks fell through, she’d find a way to arrange a separate meeting with Adam and have him step in.
Having Adam show up in person left her genuinely touched.

Chapter 76 Played Their All
Fresher
Adam breathed in slow, measured pulls, steadying himself.
He turned to Wynette, his gaze warm and full of tenderness. “Don’t be afraid, sweetheart. I’m here.”
Adam patted the back of Wynette’s hand and sighed. “You’re such a good girl. I never imagined that after I stepped away from the Shepherds, that ungrateful grandson of mine would put you through all of this. I’m so sorry, sweetheart.”
Thinking of Wynette’s long, scathing presentation laying bare every terrible thing Noah had done. Adam could barely hold himself back from marching over to throttle the boy right then and there.
Wynette could feel the old man’s heartache for her, genuine and deep.
A prick of guilt moved through her as she met Adam’s eyes. “Mr. Adam, I’m so sorry. I never should’ve put this on you. I just had nowhere else to turn.”
Having dragged the old man all this way weighed heavily on her.
But the fastest and most viable way to free the Jewells from the Shepherds ran straight through the Shepherds‘ patriarch.
The reason Wynette had endured Noah and Lorelei’s repeated cruelties in silence was because the Shepherds had deliberately kept Adam’s whereabouts hidden from her. It had taken her real time and effort to track him down.
The Shepherds had schemed against the Jewells, and Wynette was going to find a way to break it apart.
Adam understood that about her.
He simply assured her he’d give her a resolution she’d be fully satisfied with.
