He Never Loved Me Until the Day I Finally Left Him novel Chapter 18

"Get to the hospital. Right now."

It was a direct order. Then, he hung up.

After seven years of marriage, Helena knew exactly what happened when you defied him.

She could have just ignored him, but they weren't legally divorced yet. They were still husband and wife.

She didn't want to give anyone fuel to use against her.

Staring at the darkened screen, she opened the drawer and pulled out the freshly printed divorce agreement.

Fine. She'd go to the hospital, hand him the papers, and be done with it.

Once the ink was dry, they would truly sever all ties.

The thought centered her.

Taking a deep breath, she didn't rush out. Instead, she took her time getting ready.

She slipped into a denim skirt and a pair of white sneakers.

It was exactly how she used to dress before joining the Hayes family—young, vibrant, full of life.

She was only twenty-seven, after all.

Standing in front of the mirror, she twisted her hair into a messy bun, securing it with a simple hairpin.

She skipped the heavy makeup, applying only a light tinted moisturizer.

She looked fresh-faced, like a college student.

Before heading to the hospital, she stopped downstairs to grab a breakfast sandwich, planning to eat on the way.

But the bumpy cab ride, combined with the morning sickness, made her stomach churn.

She swallowed back the nausea, her appetite completely gone.

She carried the untouched food all the way up to the VIP floor.

She hadn't alerted anyone she was coming, intending to quietly slip into his room.

But the moment the elevator doors parted, she saw Janetta pacing the hallway.

Anxiety, grievance, tension.

A masterclass of emotions cycled flawlessly across her striking face.

When Janetta spotted Helena, her expression instantly hardened into a triumphant smirk.

Helena had to admit, the woman played the two-faced villain perfectly.

Carter Miles came rushing down the hall. Seeing the standoff, he rubbed his temples.

He knew his boss favored Janetta.

But he also knew Janetta didn't have a damn clue how to handle Sebastian Hayes.

Whenever the boss was sick or injured, Helena was the only one who could calm him down.

If this dragged on and the boss threw another fit, heads would roll.

Carter let out a heavy sigh. "Mrs. Hayes, the boss is waiting for you."

Helena gave him a curt nod, sidestepped the weeping actress, and walked toward the door.

Behind her, she could hear Carter trying to placate Janetta.

Janetta didn't answer, but the soft sounds of her crying echoed down the hall.

Helena pieced it together instantly.

Yesterday's crash wasn't just a tragic accident. There was definitely more to the story.

She paused for a second, then pushed the door open.
