Carter Miles walked in from outside. He paused, instantly grasping the situation.
As Sebastian's assistant, he was fully aware of everything that had been going on recently.
He sighed. "Mrs. Hayes, Mr. Hayes does care about you. Otherwise, with things escalated to this point, why wouldn't he just divorce you directly? The fact that he's holding on proves he has no intention of letting you go."
His words struck a heavy chord in Helena's heart.
But she merely listened, showing no reaction.
Carter knew it wasn't his place to say more. "I'll let you two talk. I'll come back later."
With that, he tactfully left the room.
"Helena," Sebastian suddenly spoke, calling her name.
"The media got it wrong. Buying the noodles was true, but I had to leave because an important client showed up. After she got pregnant, her temper flared. She threw a fit and insisted on coming along. I had no choice, so I had Carter pick her up. After the client meeting, I was driving her back. We got into an argument on the way, and I didn't see the approaching truck. I swerved to avoid it, and that's how the accident happened."
He forced down his frustration, trying to ease the tension in the room.
Didn't she just want an explanation? Fine, he would give it to her.
As long as she stopped acting so unreasonably in front of him.
He was sick of her passive-aggressive attitude.
"You don't need to explain any of this to me," Helena replied, her tone as indifferent as ever.
With that, she turned to retrieve the divorce papers.
But Sebastian was faster. He abruptly grabbed her arm and yanked her back.
"Sebastian, let me go. We need to talk," she said calmly, recovering her balance.
Before she could say another word, her phone buzzed.
Sebastian frowned as he glanced at the screen, and Helena saw it too.
It was Lance.
In three months, she was scheduled to move back to New York and rejoin his AI team, so there was a lot of prep work to do.
Given the time difference, Lance would usually call directly if he couldn't reach her.
"Why is he calling you?" Predictably, Sebastian's face hardened.
"That's none of your business," she shot back, displaying a rare moment of defiance.
