"I'm sorry," Helena murmured softly. "I've had a lot going on lately."
"Lena, is everything okay?" Lance picked up on her unusual tone instantly. "If you're in trouble, tell me. Don't try to shoulder everything alone."
His words gave her pause.
She had completely forgotten about Lance.
"Could you lend me seven million dollars? I'll pay you back from my future salary," she finally asked after a moment of silence. "I need to buy back my mother's apartment."
She spared him the complicated details.
Without missing a beat, Lance agreed. "That's nothing. Send me your account details, and I'll wire it right now. Though, since it's an international transfer, it might take a little while to clear."
"Thank you," she breathed out a massive sigh of relief.
"Having you back on the team is worth ten times that amount," Lance said honestly.
He didn't even question how, after being married to a billionaire for seven years, she couldn't scrape together seven million dollars on her own.
Helena felt a profound sense of gratitude toward him.
The current chaos only solidified her determination to leave.
Besides, as far as she was concerned, there was no turning back for her and Sebastian.
They chatted a bit more about work before ending the call.
In the early hours of the morning, a notification popped up on her screen.
The funds had hit her account.
The heavy knot in her chest finally unraveled.
First thing the next morning, she went straight to The Lawyer's office.
She paid off the debt in full and retrieved her late mother's IOU.
The ordeal was officially over.
As for the money she had borrowed, she would just have to pay Lance back slowly once she settled in New York.
Stepping out of the office, she took a deep breath. Even the city smog seemed to have cleared; the air felt fresher.
"What else could she be doing? Since she can't get what she wants from me, she's obviously here to cause trouble for Janetta," Sebastian sneered.
Late last night, Janetta had been rushed to the hospital with severe abdominal cramps.
The news had been kept completely under wraps, yet here Helena was, coincidentally showing up at the exact same hospital.
His annoyance with his wife deepened.
Without a second thought, he reached for the door handle.
Just then, his phone buzzed. Glancing at the caller ID, he picked it up immediately.
It was The Lawyer.
"Mr. Hayes, Mrs. Hayes came in this morning and paid off the entire debt, principal and interest included." The Lawyer delivered the report factually.
"Where did she get the money?" Sebastian asked, his voice deathly calm, eyes narrowing into slits.
"I'm afraid I don't know, sir. Since the debt has been cleared, we no longer have any legal claim over the North Hill Road apartment. We had no choice but to hand over the deed and the mortgage contract to her," The Lawyer explained fully.
Sebastian hung up the phone without another word, his piercing gaze shooting straight to Carter.
