Carter had heard the conversation and was genuinely surprised.
To the outside world, being married to Sebastian Hayes meant living a life of unimaginable luxury—endless designer clothes, limitless credit, and not a single financial worry in the world.
But that wasn't Helena's reality.
While Sebastian didn't cap her spending on the cards, he never gave her actual cash.
And since she wasn't particularly favored within the Hayes family, she had no other sources of income.
In reality, beneath the glossy exterior and the prestigious title of Mrs. Hayes, Helena was broke.
She absolutely did not have millions of dollars lying around in liquid cash.
Yet, she had somehow just paid off the entire sum in one go?
Just yesterday, she had been desperate enough to beg him for the apartment.
"Find out exactly where that money came from!" Sebastian gritted out, his jaw tight with fury.
"Right away, sir," Carter replied, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.
Without another word, Sebastian stepped out of the car, his expression dark.
His phone rang again. It was Janetta, checking in. "Seb, are you here yet?"
"I'm at the entrance," he replied tonelessly.
"I'll wait for you then," she said softly, her tone laced with guilt. "I'm so useless. If my health were better, you wouldn't have to worry about the baby so much."
Janetta was clever. She purposely made it about the baby rather than herself.
It was a calculated move designed to evoke his guilt.
"Don't overthink things," he murmured, offering perfunctory comfort.
Honestly, her repetitive whining was starting to grate on his nerves.
He chalked up his mounting impatience to the situation with Helena.
He took long strides through the hospital corridors.
As he neared Janetta's room, his footsteps faltered.
He swore to himself that if Helena was really here to harass Janetta, he would make her pay dearly.
But when he pushed the door open, Janetta was the only one inside.
"Seb, what are you looking for?" she asked, unable to hide her curiosity.
