There was absolutely no trace of a bluff in her unblinking stare.
Gazing up into those pitch-black eyes, Janetta saw nothing but sheer, murderous intent.
It was the first time in her life she had ever been faced with raw, unadulterated violence.
A deep, primal instinct told her that this woman was entirely capable of ending her life right then and there.
"Murder is illegal, Helena," Janetta managed to choke out, desperately trying to project an aura of authority.
Helena simply stared down at her like a god looking at an insect, completely unfazed by the pathetic warning.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated against the silence.
The device was still sitting undisturbed on the coffee table nearby.
Both women glanced over at the glowing screen.
It was an incoming call from Sebastian Hayes.
Janetta's face instantly twisted into an ugly sneer of triumph.
A cynical smirk played on Helena's lips. "Tell me, Janetta. Do you think he is calling to save you, or to save me?"
Janetta paled noticeably.
In all honesty, she wasn't entirely sure herself.
Still clinging to her pride, she spat back defiantly, "I am his legal wife. Don't flatter yourself."
Helena laughed outright.
Without breaking eye contact, she reached over, answered the call, and tapped the speakerphone icon. She remained completely silent.
Sebastian's deep, gravelly voice echoed through the room. "What are you up to?"
It wasn't an interrogation; his tone was shockingly casual, carrying the intimate warmth of a man checking in on his lover.
That gentle, domestic affection hit Janetta harder than a physical slap to the face.
But before the devastated woman could even process the humiliation...
...Helena lunged forward and grabbed a handful of her hair.
Janetta let out a blood-curdling shriek.
The scream carried perfectly over the line. "Helena? What's going on over there?" Sebastian demanded.
She didn't answer him.
Instead, the line captured the brutal, heavy thud of an impact.
With ruthless precision, Helena slammed Janetta's skull directly into the massive floor-to-ceiling window.
A sickening crunch vibrated through the tempered glass.
All the blood drained from Janetta's face as the world spun wildly out of focus.
Completely dismissing the broken woman on the floor, Helena spun on her heel and marched out of the room.
Survival instinct finally kicking in, Janetta scrambled toward the door.
But the imposing wall of bodyguards instantly blocked her exit.
Fortunately for Helena, the local precinct was situated right outside the park. Sirens wailed as The Police swarmed the property in under three minutes.
Storming the office, the responding officers froze upon recognizing the bloodied woman on the floor. They exchanged uneasy glances.
Everyone in town knew exactly who Janetta was.
It wasn't her fleeting celebrity status that made them hesitate...
...it was the overwhelming power associated with the title of Mrs. Hayes.
This was Riverton, after all. Sebastian's word was absolute law here.
However, a violent crime had been reported. They couldn't just sweep it under the rug.
"Ms. Ramirez, you're going to have to come down to the station with us. You've been accused of attempted murder," the lead officer stated with practiced professionalism.
"It's a lie! It's all a trap! She's the one trying to kill me!" Janetta's voice broke into a raw, manic shriek.
Thrashing against their grip, she completely lost her mind. "I want my lawyer! Call Sebastian! I am his legal wife!"
"We understand ma'am, but you still need to accompany us to the station to make a statement," the officer firmly insisted, pulling her away.
