Jarrod hadn't actually formulated a plan for this call. He defaulted to interrogation. "Are you out at a restaurant?"
"Yes. Is there a problem?" Stella asked, her voice slightly muffled as she clearly stepped into a quieter hallway.
Jarrod swallowed hard. His voice came out flat, demanding. "My arm is killing me. You promised to change my bandages until I was healed. Can you come back to The Sterling Residences tonight and do it?"
There was a sharp silence on the other end. When Stella finally spoke, her voice was crystal clear and entirely detached. "I'm currently on a business trip in Southport. I can't do that."
Jarrod hadn't expected her to be out of town. He tried to sound completely indifferent. "How long is the trip?"
"Just two more days."
Jarrod's Adam's apple bobbed. He forced the words out. "When you get back, move back into The Sterling Residences. Yvette packed up and left days ago."
Stella didn't say a single word.
The suffocating, burning sensation flared back to life in Jarrod's chest.
He let out a tense breath, his voice betraying a level of vulnerability he couldn't control. "Julian came to my office today. He pointed out some things I've been doing wrong. I—"
"Mr. Fuller," Stella cut him off cleanly, without a trace of emotion. "What did the doctor say? How much longer until your arm is fully healed?"
Jarrod froze. "About a week until the bandages come off."
"Perfect. I'll be back at The Sterling Residences in two days. In exactly one week, we will schedule our appointment at the registry."
The temperature in Jarrod's office plummeted to absolute zero.
Stella must have felt the lethal silence radiating through the phone, because she immediately followed up with, "I have to get back to my team. Goodbye."
The line went dead.
Jarrod sat completely paralyzed, the phone still pressed to his ear. His knuckles were bone-white, and his eyes were pitch black, radiating a murderous aura that practically froze the air in the room.
He had genuinely thought she was asking about his arm out of concern. Instead, she was just setting a timer for their divorce!
