Hannah’s POV
I watched Amy flee from the music room like her life depended on it.
Her footsteps echoed down the hallway until they faded into silence,
leaving Finn and me alone in a bubble of awkward tension.
“Are you okay?” I asked softly, my voice barely above a whisper.
Finn’s head turned slightly in my direction. For a brief, unguarded
moment, his expression shifted—the hard lines of his face softening
into something that looked almost like disappointment mixed with a
childlike vulnerability. It was as if someone had snatched away a toy
he’d been enjoying.
But the moment vanished as quickly as it had appeared. His jaw
tightened, and his expression hardened back into the familiar mask of
cold indifference. It was like watching a door slam shut.
“Take me back to my room,” he commanded, his voice flat and
emotionless.
I nodded, then remembered he couldn’t see me. “Of course,” I said,
moving toward him.
Chapter 22
As we walked in silence through the corridor, I couldn’t stop thinking
about what I’d just witnessed at the piano. The way his fingers had
moved across the keys with natural talent, the brief moment of
genuine engagement I’d seen on his face. For those few minutes, the
dangerous, volatile Finn Sterling had disappeared, replaced by
someone who seemed almost… human.
When we reached his bedroom door, Finn stepped away from my
touch.
“Thank you,” he said stiffly, the words sounding foreign on his lips.
I blinked in surprise. Two simple words of gratitude from him felt
more shocking than if he’d suddenly broken into song.
As he pushed open his door, I followed him inside, taking the
opportunity to observe his private space. The room was meticulously
organized–minimalist but luxurious, with every item seemingly
having its designated place. I noticed a few things were slightly out of
position–a book on the nightstand tilted at an awkward angle, a
watch not quite centered on the dresser.
Years of working with visually impaired children had taught me how
important order was when you couldn’t see. Without thinking. I
moved to straighten the book, then carefully centered the watch on
its tray.
Chapter 22
I expected Finn to snap at me for touching his things, but he
remained silent, his head tilted slightly as if listening to my
movements.
“Your room is very well organized,” I commented softly.
“Since the accident, sometimes things get moved.” He replied, his
voice neutral.
I nodded, understanding the frustration he must feel. “I just
straightened a few items. I hope that’s okay.”
He gave a short nod, and I took that as my cue to leave. I slipped out,
closing the door quietly behind me.
When I turned toward my suite, I was startled to find Amy waiting by
my door, her eyes red–rimmed and anxious.
“I’m so dead,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “He’s going to fire me for interrupting. Oh God, I should never have-”
“Hey, hey,” I said, guiding her into my room and closing the door. “It’s
okay. He’s not going to fire you.”
Amy looked at me skeptically, tears threatening to spill. “You don’t understand. Nobody interrupts Mr. Sterling, especially not when

he’s… when he seems to be enjoying something. That almost never
happens, and I ruined it.”
I squeezed her hand reassuringly. “He’s not as scary as everyone
thinks.”
Amy gave a watery laugh. “Says the woman who has somehow
survived two days without getting stabbed or thrown out.”
“Has he really stabbed someone?” I asked, half–joking.
“Not that I know of,” she admitted, wiping her eyes. “But still, he’s
been different since you arrived. Less… explosive. Especially after last
night when you slept outside his door.”
I felt my cheeks warm at the memory of waking up on the hard floor
with Finn standing over me.
