Chapter 57
Hannah : POV
The taxi inched through Manhattans afternoon traffic, carrying me back to Sterling Estate. My thoughts drifted between the strange night at Finn’s penthouse and the velvet box nestled in my purse. The vibration of my phone startled me from my reverie.
Amy: [Everything ok? The head butler asked me for your phone number earlier. Said Mr. Finn requested it.)
I stared at the message, my heart skipping. Finn had specifically asked for my number? Then it dawned on me – he must have realized I couldn’t find the security card and decided to call me instead of leaving me stranded.
My fingers hovered over the screen before typing: [Everything’s fine. Just heading back now.]
I tucked my phone away, trying to calm the flutter in my chest. It meant nothing, I reminded myself. Finn probably just wanted to make sure I wasn t still sitting in his penthouse like an abandoned puppy.
As the taxi rolled through the ornate gates of Sterling Estate, a wave of dizziness washed over me. I needed to take better care of myself – for the baby s sake, if nothing else. The doctor’s warnings about proper nutrition during early pregnancy echoed in my mind.
James, the head butler, greeted me at the entrance with a formal bow. “Welcome back, Ms. Lancaster. Mrs. Sterling has requested your presence in the east wing immediately.” His typically stoic expression held an unusual urgency.
Is something wrong?” I asked, suddenly concerned.
“Not at all, ma’am. She simply expressed… eagerness to speak with you.”
I made my way through the mansion’s labyrinthine corridors, my footsteps echoing against marble floors. What could Victoria want? Had something happened with Finn? My hand instinctively moved to my stomach as anxiety bubbled inside me.
Victoria sat in her elegant sitting room, a delicate teacup poised in her hand. When she saw me, she immediately set it down, her eyes sparkling with an excitement I’d never seen before.
“Finn called you?” The question burst from her lips before I’d even taken a seat.
I blinked in surprise. ‘Yes, but how did you-
‘In this house, my dear, very little escapes my notice.” She gestured for me to sit. “Tell me exactly what he said.”
“Not much, I admitted, perching on the edge of a velvet armchair. He just told me the security card was in the refrigerator and that I should leave
Victoria’s smile widened, confusing me further. “Do you know how many times Finn has called someone in this family in the past five years
I shook my head.
‘Never Her voice dropped to a near whisper Not once has he voluntarily picked up a phone to call anyone here Not me, not his latter, not anyone
I shifted uncomfortably. Im sure he was just worried Id starve to death in his apartment
Victoria laughed, the sound like crystal chimes Oh, my dear 1 mm has never worried about anyone survival Trust me when I say this means somethi

William Finn’s father?
She nodded. He’s just completed a business trip to Europe. It’s rare for him to stay at the estate these days A shadow crossed her face hinting at the complicated relationship she shared with her son. Id like you to inform Finn of the dinner
“Me? I squeaked. Couldn’t you have someone else call him?”
Victoria’s perfectly manicured hand reached for mine. “You’re his wife now, Hannah. It’s perfectly reasonable for you to be the one to call
My stomach knotted as I pulled out my phone. Victoria watched intently as I scrolled to Finns number, my finger hovering over the call button. Taking a
deep breath, I pressed it.
One ring. Two. Three. Four. I was about to hang up when the line connected.
“What?” Finn’s voice was sharp, impatient. In the background, I could hear the busy sounds of an office – voices calling across a room, the steady click of
keyboards.
‘Hello, Finn. My voice came out softer than I intended. Its Hannah.”
I know who it is,” he replied coldly. What do you want?
I swallowed. “Victoria asked me to let you know that William is coming home tomorrow. She’d like the whole family to have dinner together.”
Silence stretched between us. I could almost feel him calculating, weighing options.
“Tomorrow’s problems are for tomorrow,‘ he finally said, his tone clipped. Then the line went dead.
I stared at my phone. “He hung up,” I told Victoria. “I’m not sure if that’s a yes or a no.”
To my surprise, Victoria smiled triumphantly. ‘I knew you could get through to him.”
“That was getting through to him?” I asked incredulously.
‘For Finn? Absolutely. She patted my hand. “He’ll be here.”
After leaving Victoria, hunger gnawed at my stomach. I absentmindedly placed a hand over my belly, remembering the doctors strict instructions about
regular meals during pregnancy.
The kitchen was warm and bright, a welcome contrast to the mansion’s imposing grandeur. Amy was chopping vegetables, her dark han pulled back in 2 trat ponytail. When she saw me, her face lit up with a genuine smile.
