242.Chapter 242
242.Chapter 242
Nina jerked her hand back.
She looked at Ryan, expressionless. “You’ve known my true identity for a while, haven’t you?”
Ryan paused for a moment. “I just found out.”
He’d always known Nina had a secret identity.
But he never knew which group she belonged to.
That was classified.
He knew better than to ask, even when they were together.
Just like Nina. She knew about his secret, too, but never asked questions.
But this time, Ryan was genuinely in the dark. He really had no clue about what happened.
After the reunion party, Nina made up an excuse and slipped away.
Ryan guessed Nina was about to take on a mission, and knew it wasn’t his place to follow.
So he just headed back to the Swanson residence.
Half an hour ago, Ryan got a call from his superiors. They told him to take full charge of the case.
After going through the case files, he found out it was Nina who was in charge of it.
He knew Nina would be pissed, but this was his mission. He had no choice but to follow orders.

Nina locked eyes with Ryan for a long time before finally saying, “I don’t care how you arrange it. I’m getting involved in this case.”
“I knew you wouldn’t give up,” Ryan replied. “I already cleared it with the higher-ups on my way here. You’ll be my deputy and help me look into Martin and Matthew, but you have to play by my rules.”
Nina didn’t say a word.
After a moment, she turned and headed out, tossing over her shoulder to Ryan, “I want to know about any updates on the case the moment they happen.”
After leaving the factory, Nina headed straight for her car.
Simon followed her in, frowning. “Nina, are you really just letting Ryan take over the case like that?”
He’d only found out today that Ryan had a whole other side to him.
Honestly, he was pretty surprised.
But there was no way he could just snatch Nina’s case.
“He really is the better fit,” Nina said coolly.
It stung not being able to take the lead on this case.
She’d been keeping tabs on Martin for ages, and had just started to make some real progress.
There was still a ton of stuff left to dig into.
But Ryan had a point. Given who she was and where she stood, she couldn’t really get involved.
‘Maybe this isn’t such a bad thing after all, Nina thought. Her position within the Swanson family would make it easier for Ryan to dig deeper into the case.
Meanwhile, Ryan turned to Felix and said, “Take the victims back and confirm their identities immediately. If everything checks out after the investigation, contact their families and have them come pick them up.”
“Yes, sir,” Felix replied.
Felix paused, and then asked, “A few of them are about to give birth. What are we supposed to do? Are we really just going to let it happen?”

Ryan rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on.

These girls were barely out of their teens. Having a baby when they didn’t even know who the father was… Ryan couldn’t imagine how they’d cope with that.
Ryan was silent for a moment before saying, “First, help them calm down. After that, we’ll talk to their families and figure out the safest way to handle it.”
Felix sighed. “Guess that’s all we can do.”
The reporters had already broken the story.
Riverdale was about to see a major shake-up tonight.
They had to come up with a solid plan for these girls’ future.
If they didn’t, the consequences for them would be even worse.
Once Ryan wrapped things up, he left the factory.
He walked straight over to Nina’s car and knocked on the window.
Nina rolled down the window.
Ryan said, “Hop in, Nina. I need to talk to you.”
Nina didn’t hesitate. She slid into Ryan’s car.
Ryan drove, with Nina sitting shotgun.
The car cruised down the empty road.
“I need to be kept up to date on every detail of the case,” Ryan said, his voice low.
Clearly, what he’d witnessed at the factory had left him deeply unsettled.
He never truly understood Martin.
Before this case, he just thought Martin was one of those guys who always put on that gentleman act-polite and cultured on the surface, but hiding something dark underneath.
He never expected Martin could be this messed up.
He’d just talked to a few of the victims who were holding it together.
Turned out, every single one of them had been trafficked.
They came from all corners of the country, mostly from remote cities.
They all went missing just as the holidays started.
Never in their wildest dreams did they think a single break would flip their world on its head.
“So far, it all comes down to genetics,” Nina said, not holding anything back as she filled Ryan in on everything she’d uncovered.
