Nina turned to look at Miranda, her face so much like Scarlet’s that it made her zone out for a moment.

She still couldn’t figure out why Scarlet had ever fallen for a guy like David.

Other than being good-looking, he had nothing going for him.

Scarlet could’ve raised Miranda herself, but instead she handed her over to David and let her go through all that hell.

Nina thought, ‘I wonder if Scarlet would want to kill David when she finds out about all this?

‘If it were me, I would.

‘I would make that guy wish he were dead.

“Aunt Nina,” Miranda said softly, her cheeks turning red as she opened her eyes and saw Nina watching her.

She and Nina were only two years apart.

When she first found out Nina was her mom’s sister, the word “Aunt” just felt weird on her lips.

Calling her “sis” felt fine.

But now, calling her “Aunt Nina” just feels natural.

For some reason, being with Nina just made her feel safe.

Last night was the most peaceful sleep she’d had since she returned to the Hawthorne family.

Even with Edward around, she never truly felt safe. Nightmares haunted her every single night.

But now, she actually slept straight through till morning. No nightmares at all.

“Do you know when I first met your mom?” Nina asked, getting up and leisurely slipping out of her pajamas, then putting on the red dress Elaine had designed for her.

This was only the second red dress in her closet.

Elaine loved seeing her in dresses, so most of the designs she made for Nina were dresses.

Elaine was all about white.

But Nina was all about black.

So her closet was basically just black and white, with only these to red dresses that Nina specifically asked Elaine to make

Red was Scarlet’s favorite color. Nina never really understood why Scarlet loved it so much, but after trying it on herself, she realized it really did look amazing

It was vivid and had an alluring edge to it.

There was even something mysterious about it.

But what really drew her to red was how much it looked like the blood she spilled fighting her way through life

Miranda was confused why Nina suddenly brought this up, so s just shook her head

Back when her mom sent her to the Hawthorne family, she’d never even met Nina before.

Nina said, “My mom took me and dumped me on a mountain where nobody ever came back.

“I wandered for half a month before I finally made it out. I survived on wild berries I found along the way, and by the time I got out, I was barely hanging on.”

Her long, straight hair fell over her shoulders, making her look fierce and striking. She turned to Miranda. “The whole way. I begged every passerby for something to eat, but nobody would help.

“They called me dirty, called me a little beggar, and told me to get lost.

“Eventually, I just couldn’t take it anymore and started digging through trash for food. That’s when I met your mom. She took me back to her place, gave me a meal, put me in clean clothes, and even sent me to school.

“Whenever some creep at the nightclub tried anything, your mom would ruin him. Make sure he never bothers anyone again.” Nina continued, her voice calm as she told the story.

Nina smiled and added, “Your mom was a total badass. She wasnt even the owner of the club, just the manager in charge of the girls.

“When she took down those guys to protect me, and the boss tried to come after her, she got the boss fired and took his place.

“I admired her so much back then. I kept thinking. How can a girl be this strong? Can she protect herself and others, too? I want to be just like her.

“And now, I’ve finally become her.

“Pack your stuff. Once we’re done here, you’re coming back to Riverdale with me.” With that, Nina suddenly switched gears.
