“Having a mom like her is rough, and I wish I knew how to make it better for you. Maybe I’m not much help, but just remember, no matter what, I’ll always love you more than anyone else ever could.”

Nina lowered her gaze. Back then, she’d also wished that Vivian wasn’t her real mom.

Maybe then, she could’ve told herself it wasn’t her own mom who didn’t love her, but a stranger who’d hurt her.

But reality had other plans.

“By the way,” Sarah said, “I’ve been digging into Lily’s parents lately. Anna suggested maybe it was one of your mom’s former lovers, but I couldn’t find anything else. You’re way better at this than I am. Can you look into it further?”

“Former lover?” Nina scoffed. “Come on, she was just the side chick. That guy probably never even considered marrying her.” “Side chick?” Sarah was stunned.

‘Vivian’s a college professor. Why would she ever stoop to being someone’s side piece?’ Sarah thought, totally baffled. ‘ Given her looks and status, landing a good man shouldn’t have been hard at all. How did she end up as someone’s side chick?

‘But the real kicker is that after the guy ditched her, she went after James. Was she really just after the Swanson family’s formula?’
