Tyson found one, and Desmond found one as well.

Melton dug around for a long while before finally feeling something round beneath a clump of grass roo When he lifted it up, he nearly lost his footing, but the grin on his face could not have been wider.

Elizabeth surveyed the scattered group and did a quick mental tally.

“What’s the count?”

Tyson gathered his eggs together and ran a quick count. “Five on my end.”

“Six here!” Olivia’s hand shot up.

“Four.”

“Three.”

“Two.”

“One.”

“Three.”

The numbers came flying in from every direction at once.

Tyson compiled them all. “Thirty-six total.”

Elizabeth gave a satisfied nod.

“Good. Keep looking. There are more.”

The group fanned back out across the meadow, all of them bent low, hands moving through the patient, searching deliberation.

Sunlight filtered down through the canopy, falling warm on their shoulders and catching on the pale blue- green shells hidden beneath the grass roots.

Clara crouched in the grass with the darker egg still cradled in her palm, and something about the whole scene settled over her like a benediction.

Every other time she’d crouched in tall grass, it had been for a mission. Waiting in ambush. Moving toward a target. Surviving something.

Now she was looking for eggs.

She had never known that looking for eggs could feel like this. No tension, no fear, no need to stay on

guard. Just sunlight, just grass, just the satisfaction of finding those small, round little dings hidden beneath the roots.

“I found another one!” Olivia’s voice rang across the meadow again.

This was her sixth, and she was vibrating with the pure, unself-conscious delight of a child on an Easter morning.

‘Come look! There’s a whole clutch over here!”

The group converged, and they watched her lift three eggs carefully from the hollow she’d uncovered, raising them above her head so the light poured through the shells and illuminated the faint, ghostly shapes within.

“There’s a yolk! Look, you can see the yolk inside!”

Elizabeth laughed and shook her head. “Stop shaking them. If you scramble what’s inside, they won’t hatch.” Olivia quickly lowered her hands and placed the eggs carefully into the collection box Tyson had brought. The bottom was lined with dry grass, and she set each egg down one by one in neat rows, like a small cluster of little planets.

Desmond came in from the far side of the meadow, a few more eggs balanced in his cupped hands.

“There’s another stretch of grass past that rise. Denser than this. I’d bet there are more in there.”

Elizabeth stood, brushed the dirt from her knees, and turned to look.

“Let’s check it out.”

The whole group followed her toward the new stretch of meadow, spreading out in a loose, easy formation.

Clara walked at the back, the dark egg still in her hand. She looked down at it, then looked up at the backs of the people ahead of her.

Elizabeth walked at the front, her ponytail swinging, still murmuring about how eggs from older hens were the best for hatching.

Tyson walked at her side, the collection box held steady in both hands, his footing unhurried and sure.

Olivia bounced along behind them, still enthusiastically cataloguing her finds to a patient, long-suffering Felix.

Rocket moved through the middle of the group in his characteristic silence, one hand still loosely closed around an egg he hadn’t put in the box yet.

Sharpie walked at the back, face expressionless, but with a slight curve at the corner of his mouth.

Clara tucked her hand over her pocket to protect the egg inside and quickened her pace to catch up.

The sunlight lay warm and generous across her shoulders.

She suddenly felt that this one day had been happier than all her past days put together.

But that particular joy didn’t last as long as it deserved to.

Olivia was crouched in the grass, carefully holding a freshly found egg in both hands, lifting it toward the sunlight to see the outline of the yolk inside, smiling like a child.

Felix was beside her, pulling the grass back to reveal yet another egg beneath, this one noticeably larger than the last.

Rocket crouched a short distance away, two eggs balanced in his broad hands, his honest, open face settled into an expression of quiet, uncomplicated contentment.

Sharpie combed through the grass with that same unreadable composure of his, but his hands moved with exquisite care, as though he understood on some instinctive level that the shells were something worth being gentle with.

Clara already had four eggs in her pocket, bulging noticeably, one hand covering it while the other kept searching through the grass.

Elizabeth stood on a flat rock nearby, elevated just enough to survey the whole scene below her, wearing the warmly delighted expression of someone watching something she loved unfolding exactly as it should.

“Don’t get so focused on what’s ahead of you that you stop watching where you step. Last thing we need is someone crushing a clutch.”

The words had barely left her mouth when something split the quiet of the jungle without warning.

A series of sharp, dense cracks rang out from deep in the tree line, the sound of something heavy moving fast through the undergrowth and snapping branches underfoot, drawing closer by the second.

Desmond’s expression changed in an instant.

He snapped to his feet, one hand dropping to the weapon at his hip, his gaze cutting toward the direction of the sound.

“Someone’s out there.”

Every single person in the meadow went still.

Olivia’s egg nearly slipped from her fingers. She caught it, lowered it into the collection box with urgent care, and was on her feet with her hand on her weapon before the motion was even fully complete.

Felix, Rocket, and Sharpie shifted into combat readiness simultaneously, the transition so clean and immediate it left no seam between one state and the other.

Clara’s right arm was still compromised by her injury, but she drew her energy sword regardless and stepped in front of Elizabeth without hesitation.

Tyson and Melton closed in on either side of Elizabeth, their respective escorts forming up around her in a tight, instinctive perimeter.

Desmond stood at the very front, eyes narrowed, watching the figures emerge from the tree line’s de shadow.

One. Two. Three. More after that, and more still, the number climbing steadily.

They wore dark grey mech armor, the plating worn and patchy, some of it marked with bullet/holes and blade scars.
