Their weapons ran the full, ugly spectrum, from energy rifles and energy swords to a handful of old- fashioned kinetic arms that a few of the fighters had slung across their shoulders.

The insignias on the armor had been deliberately ground away, but Desmond recognized the paint scheme and the modification style in the space of a single glance.

Space pirates. And not just any crew.

“Red Scorpion,” Desmond said, his voice dropping into something low and iron-hard.

Melton swept his scope across the opposing line and read the details on the nearest suit of armor. His expression curdled.

“At least twenty.”

Red Scorpion.

The most savage and merciless pirate outfit operating in the Kingdom’s sector, a name synonymous with slaughter, plunder, and the kind of brutality that left no survivors to file complaints.

Their bounty listing had been pinned to Kingdom’s military most-wanted board for five straight years, and in all that time, not a single soul had managed to collect on it.

They were simply that dangerous.

Their commander was reportedly an SS-level mental power user, and the core of their crew ran no lower than S-level across the board.

They were armed to the teeth, tactically ruthless, and bold enough to meet the Kingdom’s own regular forces in a straight-up engagement and walk away.

Twenty Red Scorpion pirates, standing in the jungle of a remote, uninhabited world.

This was not a coincidence.

Desmond moved immediately, putting himself between the newcomers and Elizabeth in two swift, backward steps.

“Ma’am, fall back.” Tyson and Melton pulled their respective escorts inward at the same moment, folding their formation tight until Elizabeth stood at the protected center.

Clara, Olivia, Felix, Rocket, and Sharpie closed in from every angle, and in seconds, a dozen people stood back to back in a compact defensive ring, weapons trained outward.

Rocket and Olivia had their barrels leveled at the lead pirates, hands steady and practiced, though their knuckles had gone white against the grips.

Elizabeth, however, wasn’t rattled in the slightest.

he stood quietly at the heart of the formation and watched the emerging pirates through the between her people, her expression composed and unhurried.

The one at the front wore dark crimson armor with a snarling scorpion blazoned across the chest its tail arched high and vicious.

His helmet was off, revealing a face built from heavy, brutal lines, and a scar ran from his forehead all the way down to his cheekbone on the left side, cutting his eyebrow cleanly in two.

He had a heavy energy axe in one hand, and the blade was stained with something dark that could’ve been

ther human or animal in origin.

He stopped about fifteen paces from Desmond, and his twenty pirates fanned out at his back in a wide. unhurried line, every weapon trained on Elizabeth’s group.

He tilted his head, and his gaze drifted past Desmond entirely and settled on Elizabeth at the center of the

luster.

You’re the owner of Tycoon Farm. Elizabeth Schofield, right?”

Elizabeth looked back at him through the gap, unblinking and utterly unbothered.

And who are you? What do you want?”

The pirate leader smiled.

It wasn’t the most pleasant thing to look at, his teeth all yellow and cold, predatory amusement.

Who we are doesn’t matter.” He shifted the axe in his grip and took one slow, deliberate step forward. “What matters is that you’re worth a lot of money.” Another step. “Someone’s put up one hundred million stellar coins for your head.”

Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed by a fraction. “A hundred million? Someone thinks very highly of me.”

“That’s none of your concern.” He raised the axe and pointed its blade at her with the casual ease of someone who’d done this particular thing many times before. “A smart move would be stepping out here on your own. I’ll make it quick for you.

“But if you want to be difficult about it…” His gaze swept across Desmond and the others with cool, dismissive contempt. “I cut through every last one of your people first, and then I take your head. Either way, I get paid. The only difference is how much you suffer before the end.”

He looked Elizabeth up and down with a slow, insulting deliberateness, his lip curling. “Figured someone worth a hundred million would at least be impressive. Instead, you’re a C-level mental power user. Barely worth the trip.”

The pirates behind him erupted into raucous, mocking laughter.

‘C-level! A hundred million stellar coins for a C-level!”

Boss, that’s the easiest payday we’ve ever had!”

Desmond’s face went to iron.

“Shut your mouth!” His barrel snapped toward the speaker without a tremor.

The pirate leader’s smile flattened slightly, and he turned a measuring look toward Desmond.

“Oh, look at that. A loyal dog.” He lifted the axe with a casual, practiced ease. “Fine. We put the dog down first, then the owner.”

He swept his hand forward. “Move in.”

All twenty pirates advanced at once.

Desmond pulled the trigger.

The energy bolt punched into the lead pirate’s chest, and the armor split along a jagged seam, staggering him backward, but he didn’t go down.

Red Scorpion’s armor had been heavily modified. Its defensive rating far outstripped anything standard- issue, and the difference was immediately, viciously obvious.

Melton’s rapid-fire rifle opened up in the same breath, the dense volley of bolts forcing the front line to pull back and shield up, but it was suppression only, not damage.

Tyson surged forward and brought his energy sword down in a powerful arc toward the nearest pirate.

The man caught it on his blade and threw sparks in every direction.

Tyson’s mech was the better machine, but the pirate had raw, brutal strength on his side, and the impact drove Tyson two full steps backward.

Clara gritted her teeth and drove her energy sword at a pirate trying to flank them from the side.

Her left arm was still damaged, and the movement lacked its usual fluid precision. The pirate read it instantly and sidestepped with ease, then reversed his grip and brought the butt of his weapon crashing down onto her shoulder.

A short, involuntary sound escaped her as she stumbled backward, and Olivia caught her before she went down.

Felix and Rocket fought back to back, absorbing a two-sided assault from a pair of pirates bearing down on them from opposing angles.

Felix’s aim was clean and accurate, but the numbers were brutally against them. Every pirate he pushed back was replaced by two more surging forward.

Rocket swung his heavy axe down, its edge crashing into a pirate’s mech. A deep gash sliced through the metal’s surface, but the axe was lodged in the enemy’s armor.
