There was already a line in front of the stall. It wasn’t very long, but everyone had the same determined look–like they were sure they had to buy it.
When it was Thalia’s turn, she saw the eggs on the shelf.
They had pale green shells with tiny brown specks. They were a bit bigger than normal eggs and neatly stacked, glowing softly under the light.
“I’ll take ten,” she said, her voice a little shaky.
The clerk was a young woman. She smiled warmly and moved quickly.
“Sure, Ma’am. Here you go.”
Thalia took the two boxes of eggs and held them carefully, like they were something precious.
She looked down at the pale green shells, and her eyes stung a little.
It wasn’t for any other reason–just because she finally didn’t have to go to Seafarm Group and deal with that attitude anymore.
Rumi, Darya, and Karina all bought some too. The four of them stood by the edge of Mercury Plaza, holding their eggs. They looked at each other, then suddenly all smiled.
“How are you going to cook them?” Darya asked first.
Karina said, “Egg custard. That’s the best way to taste the quality.“/
Darya said, “I’ll make scrambled eggs with tomatoes! I still have some Tycoon Farm tomatoes at home. Perfect with these eggs.”
Thalia thought for a moment. “I’ll boil mine. Good eggs taste best just boiled in plain water.”
Rumi laughed. “Alright, stop standing here. Let’s go home and cook!”
Karina came home, and the house was quiet.
Her husband, Bryson Oatrun, had already gone to work. Her older daughter, Lillian Oatrun, was still asleep, while her younger daughter, Beatrice Oatrun, was awake. She was curled up on the couch, scrolling through her device. Her hair was a total mess, and she was still wearing an old, faded T–shirt.
“Mom, what did you buy?” Beatrice asked without looking up, sounding lazy.
Karina put the shopping bag on the dining table and took out the two boxes of pale green eggs.
“Tycoon Farm’s Cluckoo Eggs. They just went on sale today. I stood in line for over an hour to get them.”
Beatrice finally looked up, glanced at the eggs, and curled her lips.
“Eggs? What’s so good about them? They taste fishy.” She had never liked eggs since she was little. She always said they had a strange smell.

-Beiled, fried, scrambled–she wouldn’t touch any of them.
Karina had tried everything over the years, but nothing worked.

Karina ignored her and went into the kitchen to start cooking.
First, she washed the eggs gently under running water, then cracked three of them into a bowl.
The moment the shells broke, a light, fresh smell drifted out.
Karina paused and leaned in to sniff,

There was no fishy smell she was used to from Seafarm Group eggs. Instead, there was a clean scent, like grains and fresh grass.
She picked up a fork and started whisking the eggs.
The mixture turned a deep golden yellow, thicker and richer than the pale, watery eggs she was used to getting from Seafarm Group.
She added a pinch of salt, a splash of milk, and whisked it again until everything was fully blended. Then she strained it to make the texture extra smooth. After that, she poured it into a small baking dish and placed it directly in the oven at a low temperature.
While the egg custard slowly baked into a soft, silky pudding, she started preparing the rest of breakfast.
Toast and sliced fruit.
By the time everything was ready, the egg custard was almost done too.
“Lillian! Beatrice! Time to get up and eat!” Karina called toward the rooms.
Lillian came out rubbing her eyes. Her hair was messy, and she was still in pajamas. She sat down at the dining table right away.
“Mom, I’m so hungry. What’s for breakfast?”
Karina brought out the freshly baked egg custard.
It was cooked perfectly–smooth on top, softly set, with a gentle jiggle like a warm golden pudding.
She scooped up a spoonful. The custard wobbled slightly on the spoon, with warm steam rising.
“Wow, you made egg custard today?” Lillian said, surprised.
Karina usually didn’t make egg custard because Beatrice didn’t eat it. Whenever she did, most of it would be left over.
Karina didn’t explain. She put the egg custard in the middle of the table, then set out toast and fruit.
Beatrice slowly moved over from the couch. She glanced at the egg custard and wrinkled her nose.
