Chapter 134
Carter
Briar had been quiet, even as we chatted with her grandparents over dinner. She curled into me like I was a shield as we sat observing the stars. Why? I wasn’t sure. I just protectively held her to me as we stared at the night’s sky. Then she had said those words and I couldn’t help but kiss her. When her grandparents disappeared finally down the trail, I forced her to
look at me.
“You mean it?”
“Yes.”
I searched her eyes, seeing only sincerity and kissed her again. When we followed her grandparents‘ footsteps to the house she didn’t say a word as we walked hand in hand. She murmured a polite goodbye and hopped on her bike alongside me and we headed home.
When we entered the house she greeted Rosie and Tucker after discarding her winnings on the kitchen counter going straight for a beer from the fridge. She had yet to open the plastic film encasing the gift basket. Like she didn’t care about her win. I studied her but when her eyes met mine a feral sort of need bore into my soul, but I knew something was up with her and orgasams weren’t going to fix it. I sat on one of the stools and pulled her between my
legs.
Brushing the flyaway hairs out of her face I looked down into those turquoise eyes, forcing her to hold my stare. She let out a sigh as Tucker wound through her legs. I couldn’t help this pit in my stomach that Jake had been hiding her from me. It had been eating at me since she got here. I didn’t know if I’m afraid or determined to know why. But why would Jake want her here
unless he had intended for me…us to find the truth?
“I’m so tired of navigating these secrets,” she admitted

Chapter 134
“I thought Jake told me everything until you showed up, that man hid you well and I am sure for good reason. His moral code was true, I have to believe whatever it is, that he did it to
protect you.”
“Did what exactly? I feel like there’s so many lies now. Martha acted like I wouldn’t like what I
found out if she told me.”
“So you did ask her?” she nodded. “He kept you away when you were little. Divide is Divide, your either in or you’re out, maybe they were just concerned about raising you here in a place that may not appear to want you,” I spoke honestly but I couldn’t help the wince as I felt the way she would perceive the words as they rolled out. In my mind, who wouldn’t want Briar to be a part of their lives, however a packmember that scented wolfless all her life would have been at the bottom of the food chain so to speak in this town. Maybe that was all the secret
was…but, I doubted it.
“I get it, but…” I started and her eyes blinked. “Where I grew up wasn’t much better. Mom and I were still outsiders. I had a lot of trouble with kids at school, Jake knew that.” She shook her
head as if shaking off another thought.
“What is it?” I asked running soothing hands up and down her back.
“Jake left me a letter, I haven’t gotten the nerve to read it yet.”
“Do you want to open it now?” a swirl of emotion flowed through her as she shook her head no. She burrowed her face into my chest. The salt of her tears became a pungent aroma that hit me in the heart. As much as I wanted to know what that letter said, I knew she had recently dealt with so much that the impending possibilities must be too much. So instead of pressuring her I asked. “What do you want to do right now?”
