Her Divorce, His Downfall (Sophia and Damian) novel Chapter 128

Chapter 128

Her pinching felt like nothing more than a feeble flutter against Julian’s strength.

A soft chuckle escaped him as he easily caught her chilled hand in his.

His thumb stroked gentle circles over her knuckles, imparting a steadying warmth.

His voice dropped, low and fervent. Don’t be afraid. As long as I’m here, no one can lay a finger on you. I won’t allow it.

I’ve waited too many years to let anyone hurt the woman who is mine. I’m done waiting.

The words struck a deep chord. Sophia’s nose stung sharply, a sudden film of tears blurring her vision.

Part of her knew he was leaning into his protective role, declaring no one would bully his woman. Yet, the raw conviction in his promise-no one can hurt you-pierced through every wall she’d built.

Sophia had stood alone for so long, fiercely independent, that she’d almost forgotten what it felt like to be sheltered, to be someone’s priority.

The hallway light fell on him, casting a faint, almost divine halo that accentuated the sharp, clean lines of Julian’s face and the unyielding resolve in his eyes.

He was still here. The Julian who had always cherished her, who had always been her safe harbor. With him, she could face anything.

Hand in hand, they stepped into the grand ballroom. The lively hum of conversation died instantly, every head turning, every gaze locking onto their joined hands and united front.

From across the room, Damian watched them.

A fresh, dense ache bloomed in his chest, a slow, crushing pain that made his breath catch.

He clenched his fists at his sides, the muscles in his jaw working.

Tonight’s gathering was packed with political heavyweights, business magnates, and oldmoney families. He couldn’t afford a scene. Swallowing the fury, he forced his expression into a neutral mask.

The Hall Residence was out in full force tonight. Among the sea of influential guests, one arrival commanded particular respect: Bruce Hall, younger brother to Edward.

Bryce was a man forged by a lifetime of service.

A retired Army General, he had devoted his entire career to the nation, stepping back only recently due to a recurring leg injury, now serving as an advisor to the Defense Committee.

At his side was his only son, Samuel Hall, a current Colonel in the Army.

Samuel had followed in his father’s footsteps, graduating from the National Defense University’s Campaign Command Department and building a distinguished career within Army operational systems.

It was Samuel who had honed Damian’s exceptional marksmanship.

After returning from France and obtaining his firearm license, Damian had spent countless hours at the range under Samuel’s exacting tutelage.

Veridian Group’s subsidiary, Nova Forge Tech, had developed a cuttingedge generation of military drones.

Damian had donated the entire batch to Samuel’s unit in the Central Theater Special Operations Brigade.

This act had earned Veridian Group recognition as a Patriotic Enterprise Supporting the Military.

Samuel had watched Damian grow up, and for a time, considered channeling the young man’s rebellious energy into military discipline.

The idea was shelved only after Daniel argued that Hall Group needed its heir in the business world.

The deep ties remained, with Samuel facilitating Hall Group’s and Veridian’s numerous security deployments, defense collaborations, and project safety protocols.

Samuel’s wife, Alice White, was a former military doctor, gentle and poised.

His son, Barry Hall, younger even than Bella, was a thirdyear student at the National Defense University.

He was majoring in Command Information Systemsa rising talent in military technology.

Hearing of Julian’s return from Northern Europe, Samuel’s family had taken a day’s leave specifically to attend the welcome

party.

The extended family network was also present: Nick Nelson, brother to Bradley’s wife Sally; Catherine’s uncle Nathaniel Pierce and a distant cousin, Ashley Hale; even a distant nephew of Eleanor’s, Alexander Wayne.

In short, everyone who matteredand a few who perhaps didn’t –had shown up.

Bruce’s keen eyes, sharpened by decades of command, swept across the room and settled on Julian and Sophia.

The air around him seemed to chill several degrees, carrying the silent, formidable weight of his authority.

His brow was slightly furrowed.

Julian. You’re back. His voice was a low rumble, weathered

but firm.

Sophia tensed instinctively beside Julian. Sensing her fear, Julian gave her hand a reassuring squeeze, his thumb continuing its calming motion.

The gesture seemed to say, He doesn’t bite.

With a respectful nod, Julian led Sophia forward.

Uncle Bruce, this is Vivian Fitzgerald, heiress of the Fitzgerald family from Los Angeles, My fiancée.

It’s a pleasure to meet you, Uncle Bruce.Sophia managed a smile, though she felt laid bare under his penetrating stare.

Bruce studied her for a long, silent moment before giving a slight, acknowledging nod.
