He was too close. Close enough that she could hear his heartbeat, smell that cold, familiar scent.
She used to crave it. Now it made her sick.
Sophia leaned back, putting distance between them. Her eyes met his, calm and steady.
“My terms? Get the hell out of this room.”
Damian’s gaze locked on the red seeping through the gauze on
her forehead.
Her hair spilled over her shoulders. Long lashes trembled. That proud nose. Those lips–still stained with his blood from when
she bit him.
She looked fragile. Breakable. And all he wanted to do was shut her up.
Nothing she said was anything he wanted to hear anyway.
His head dipped lower. Sophia’s eyes snapped shut.

He covered his eyes and bolted for the door.
“Get back here.” Damian climbed off the bed, his tone sharp.
Liam shuffled back, face burning, and leaned in to whisper something.
Damian’s brow furrowed, his expression growing more and
more grim.
A moment later, he and Liam hurried out.
The door slammed shut.
Only then did Sophia pull the blanket down, her face wet and
cold.
Not long after he left, Eleanor and Catherine arrived with chicken soup.
Eleanor took one look at Sophia and knew she’d

She called Damian–and when she found out he’d gone to see
Isabelle, she exploded.

In the dream, a man in a ghost mask appeared in front of her.
She screamed.
Then the hand slowly lowered the mask–revealing a face she knew too well.
Her blood ran cold.
Damian moved closer, ice–cold amusement in his eyes.
Despair crashed over her like a wave.
Sophia sobbed, trembling violently, mumbling through her
tears.

A gentle touch brushed her forehead. A large hand caught hers mid–air, steady and warm. A soft voice murmured, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
Like a drowning person clutching a lifeline, Sophia gripped that hand and pressed it to her cheek. Her breathing slowed. She fell back into back into deep sleep.
“Dr. Wilson, you’re not on call tonight. What are you doing here?” A nurse asked in surprise as she entered the room to do
her rounds.
Connor quickly pressed a finger to his lips. The nurse covered her mouth and left.
