Chapter 5
Divorce?
Damian had never considered it. Not once.
This lifetime, he’d chosen Sophia–that was final.
Her name was carved into his bones from the years he’d spent chasing her, no matter the cost.
She was his hard–won prize, beaten out from countless rivals. How could he ever let go?
He didn’t see anything wrong with looking after Isabelle. Her sister was his sister, wasn’t she?
Maybe Sophia was just pissed he’d missed her mom’s memorial. Or maybe she was jealous of her sister.
Either way, threatening divorce was just her way of making him grovel. A power play.
He got it. And he was willing to indulge her little fits of temper.
But this was the second time tonight she had mentioned divorce, and he was starting to get annoyed.
Damian’s gaze locked onto her face. He saw it clearly now–the qold finality in her eyes.

Just like three years ago at Connor’s birthday party.
The night she’d watched Connor and Isabelle kiss.
Everyone knew Sophia had been in love with Connor since they were kids. The golden couple, everyone said.
But then Connor was with her sister. Of course she couldn’t handle it.
Sophia stood behind them, tears streaming down her face. But she didn’t notice that Damian was standing behind her, watching her in silence.
That same night, he’d gotten her blackout drunk. One thing led to another, and they ended up in bed.
To his surprise, it was her first time. He’d assumed she and Connor had already slept together.
Shocked and thrilled, Damian proposed on the spot.
But she freaked out and bolted to Europe for some new project.
He immediately followed her. When she was held up by local robbers, he didn’t hesitate–he took a bullet for her.
He almost didn’t make it off the operating table and lay in a coma for a full week.

The first words out of his mouth when he woke up: “Sophia, will you marry me?”
Sophia said yes through tears. For three years, she threw herself into being the perfect wife.
For him, she learned to cook, to manage his health, to pick out his clothes, and to take care of his every need.
Damian knew she’d married him at twenty–two while carrying the weight of running the Anderson family’s Zenith Corporation.
He worried the stress of work plus pregnancy would be too much. So he always used protection.
If not for tonight’s little incident, they would’ve kept living like this–peaceful, quiet.
At this thought, the intimidating chill emanating from Damian instantly vanished.
He leaned down slightly, his deep voice soft and coaxing.
“Sophia, I know you’re in a bad mood today. You’re just saying things you don’t mean. I’ll make it up to you,”
He paused, his fingers threading through her hair, his tone. edged with warning,

“Don’t talk about divorce again. You know Grandma adores you. She’d never allow it.”
At the mention of Eleanor Hall, Sophia’s heart skipped a beat.
A flood of childhood memories washed over her.
New York’s four most powerful families were all friends for generations.
The Halls and Andersons? Especially tight.
When she was little, her mother often took her to the Hall
residence.
Damian’s grandma, Eleanor, and his mom, Catherine, adored
her.
Treats, toys, attention–they spoiled her rotten. Treated her like their own family.
But Eleanor’s favorite grandson–Damian, a year older than her
-was a menace.
The moment he saw her, he’d pull her hair, yank her shoelaces, and snatch her toys. Made her bawl her eyes out.
Then he and the other kids would clap and laugh.
That’s when Damian’s uncle Julian would step in and scold his 4/6

bratty nephew.
He’d scoop her up gently, wipe her tear–streaked face, and soothe her with a soft voice.
Sophia stared up at the boy eight years older than her, all her hurt melting away.
