Chapter 3
The audience didn’t get my mindset.
This was a role-playing game about family. The only play was to act as natural as
possible.
You don’t stand outside your own front door and beg to be let in.
I waited for the lock to click and the heavy door to creak open.
A blast of frigid air hit me instantly.
I sighed in relief. The AC was heavenly compared to the summer heat outside.
I squinted down at a small, blurry shape dressed in red.
Judging by the bouncing pigtails, it was a little girl in a dress.
She let out a giggle and lunged at me.
Her icy hands clamped around my throat.
I took it for an enthusiastic hug and squeezed her back.
Her dress was soaking wet. I tutted.
“Why are your clothes wet? Let’s get those off and find you something dry!”
My nose twitched at the thick metallic scent in the air.
“Are you hurt, sweetie?” I asked, worried. “Where do we keep the first aid kit?”
The chat feed exploded.
[Open your eyes, you idiot! That’s a Boss!]
[That’s not water, it’s blood! She isn’t hurt, she’s covered in gore!]
[Doesn’t matter. As soon as He comes home, she’s dead meat.)
I couldn’t see the comments, so I just carried her inside.

I found a frilly white dress in her princess bedroom and helped her change.
Her grip on my neck loosened, and her hands fell away.
She looked confused. I grabbed a warm towel and gently wiped the “mud” from her
face.
Beneath the grime, she was an adorable little girl.
I tapped my cheek and grinned.
“Families help each other, but I think I deserve a reward. How about a kiss for Mommy?”
The little girl twisted the hem of her dress shyly.
She leaned in, pecked my cheek, and darted away.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Thank you, Mommy.”
Mommy?
I was a mother, minus the labor pains!
I’d hit the jackpot.
In the real world, you hear horror stories about dying in childbirth.
I’d always wanted a family, but I was terrified of the pain.
I tucked her in for a nap.
The system voice chimed in my ear.
[Initial Players: 30. Survivors: 20.]
Ten players dead, just from the room selection.
I pulled out my phone and held it inches from my nose.

I squinted at the group chat.
The survivors were sharing intel.
Apparently, Brad and three others had fought over the third-floor key.
Brad won, but the moment he opened the door, a werewolf lunged out.
It unhinged its jaw and swallowed him whole,
The creature crunched loudly before spitting out picked-clean bones.
Through the open door, the others saw piles of skeletons.
