Chapter 4
His voice was a low, magnetic rumble that seemed to shake the very air.
“Well, well. Isn’t that a surprise. You actually survived Meg Summers.”
Then the little girl’s voice cut in, cold as ice.
“Back off. This mommy is fun. I want to break her myself.”
He didn’t even bother replying. With a casual flick of his wrist, he sent her flying off the
couch.
She slammed against the balcony door. Crunch. The sound of wet, shattering bone filled
the room.
“Watch your tone,” he sneered.
“Or have you actually convinced yourself you’re my daughter?”
That did it.
I scrambled off the sofa, sputtering in indignation.
“Is that how you talk to a child? Father of the Year over here, huh?”
I reached out, intending to slap some sense into him.
Instead, my hand slipped and landed-firmly on his rock-hard abs.
Oh my.
I couldn’t resist giving them a squeeze. Or two.
Black smoke began to pour off him. He was about to blow.
I switched gears instantly.
“Meg is my little angel, and you’re my big teddy bear. We’re one big happy family!”
“Honey, you’re built like a Greek god. But… isn’t it a shame you’re a bit short?”

“It’s okay, I’m here now. I’ll cook you big, healthy meals every day so you can both grow big and strong.”
The chat feed went wild.
[Jesus, does she have a death wish?]
[It’s him. The Headless Boss. This is the guy who killed Arthur.]
[Wait, is the Boss blushing? That’s actually adorable.]
[You people are thirsty.]
The viewers held their breath, waiting for him to tear me apart.
That was the standard script for this dungeon
To everyone’s shock, he lifted the head he’d been holding and snapped it back onto his
neck.
He leaned in close, dropping the icy act for pure indignation.
“Short? I’m six-foot-one. Look again.”
Apparently, the male ego is fragile even in the afterlife-especially about height.
“Alice, look closer.”
Hearing my name on his lips made my heart skip a beat.
I yanked his tie, pulling him down toward me
“It’s all a blur,” I whispered. “Come closer.”
Seeing his handsome features up close gave me a thrill.
Thank god this game monitors Sanity Levels and not heart rate.
If it did, I’d be dead meat.
His silence unnerved me, so I turned up the charm.

“Wow, you are six-one. And I’m five-five. We re a perfect fit!”
The man in the suit turned bright red. He opened his mouth to argue…
Suddenly, the little girl in the bloody dress had pulled herself together. She launched a flying drop-kick that sent him straight into the ceiling.
He was stuck fast.
Meg looked at me with wide, innocent eyes and nuzzled my cheek.
“Mommy, Meg is starving. I want food.”
How could anyone say no to that face?
I raided the fridge, humming as I whipped up a feast.
Nothing was too good for my husband and daughter.
