Chapter 18
Evan snapped.
Screw this Heart of Bliss crap,” he screamed, his voice raw with panic. “It is just a human heart, right? I have one of
those!”
He was too terrified to attack the monsters, so he turned on the weakest link. He grabbed Tiffany before she could react
and hurled her toward his exit.
One of the locks on his door morphed into a grotesque, gaping maw. It caught the screaming girl in mid-air and
swallowed her whole.
There was a sickening crunch of bone, and then she was gone.
It happened so fast I could not even raise a hand to stop it.
Evan spun around, his eyes wild and desperate, locking his gaze on me. He still had one lock left to feed.
Meg let out a chilling, dismissive laugh.
Her white dress expanded, swirling into a vortex of razor-sharp lace that ground Evan into paste.
A moment later, a fine red mist was all that remained of him. The blood soaked into Meg’s dress, turning the pristine
fabric a deep crimson.
1 really wanted to be a good girl until Mommy left,” Meg whispered to the bloody mist. “But you just had to push your
luck.
She looked up at me with an angelic smile, reached into her own chest, and ripped out her heart. She tossed it casually
at the second lock on my door.
“I hate to say goodbye. Mommy,” she said. “But I need you to go live a full life, even If I am not in it.”
“It is better than fading into the void.”
Bernard and Eleanor followed her lead. They tore open their chests to unlock my third and fourth shackles.
“Listen.” Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling. “If you ever meet my son out there, tell him the hydrant ran dry. Tell
him the fire was not his fault.”
“And tell my daughter her father died a hero.” Bernard added, his voice rasping. Tell her I was not some dirty old man.”
“You are just as dear to us,” Eleanor continued, her form beginning to fade. “You are our own flesh and blood now. We
will love you forever.”

Detrás de un disfraz acecha la presa. ¿Quién cae primero?
Tears streamed down my face.
The heavy iron door groaned open, revealing a blinding flash of white light.
My vision was as terrible as ever.
Yet, instinct guided me. I lunged forward and pulled them into a fierce embrace.
“Is this the end?” I sobbed into the boss’s chest. “Will you die without your hearts?”
The boss held me tight. His dark eyes were filled with nothing but adoration.
“No, my love. We will simply be reset. We will lose our memories and be reassigned to a new instance.”
“But make no mistake,” he vowed. “When we meet again, I will find you.”
“Me too. Mommy!” Meg chimed in.
“Us too. child,” the old couple whispered.
The grandfather clock struck midnight. Four pairs of strong hands placed themselves against my back and gave me a
gentle shove toward the light.
Four voices blended into a warm, final chorus,
Take care of yourself. Be brave. Until we meet again.”
The mechanical system voice began to drone in my ear, shattering the moment.

I ignored the noise. I strained my eyes against the glare, desperate for one last look at the dark silhouette standing at the
threshold.
