Chapter 16
Another winter.
Ethan took me skiing in Vermont.
On the peak, white everywhere.
I touched my left leg, instinctively. Better now, but extreme cold still ached.
Ethan crouched, checked my bindings. Stood, tucked my hand in his pocket.
“Scared?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I know.” I smiled at him. “This time, if there’s an avalanche, you’ll be buried
with me.”
He blinked.
Then kissed me hard. On a 10,000-foot mountain. Snow swirling.
We kissed.
“No.” He pulled back, forehead against mine. Voice solemn as a vow. “I’ll carry you out.
And if I can’t?”
“We go together.”
“But until the last second, I’m holding your hand.”
Wind screamed.
But I heard flowers blooming.
Spring.
In my heart, forever.
