Chapter 15
Lucas came by a few times. Ring in hand, the one I’d thrown in the champagne tower.
Heard he’d searched every dumpster in the city.
He cornered me outside the office.
“Nina, twenty years together, that doesn’t count for anything? Look, I know I messed up. But I get it now. I always loved you. Marry me. I’ve already planned everything. That island you always talked about…”
I looked at the man I once thought I’d grow old with.
Just felt hollow.
“Lucas. You don’t love me. You love the idea of me, the one who followed you around,
never complained, never left. But I’m not her anymore. I’m actually alive now.
Ethan called security. Took my hand in front of him. Interlaced fingers. The ring on his finger glinting, caught Lucas’s eye.
“Mr. Reed.” Ethan looked down at him, calm and unhurried. “Not a great look, pining after someone else’s fiancée. Let me reintroduce you.”
He slid his arm around my waist.
“This is my wife. Nina Peterson.”
Lucas went gray. The ring he’d treasured slipped from his fingers. Rolled into a storm
drain.
Gone.
Heard the Mitchells went completely under. Jason sold everything to pay debts. Moved into a basement apartment. Started drinking, rambling about his amazing sister.
No one believed him.
Rose didn’t fare better. Without the Mitchells she was nothing. Tried latching onto other rich guys. Her reputation was toxic.

Heard she ended up hostessing at a nightclub. Once I drove past, saw her all made-up,
seeing a client out.
She saw me.
