Chapter 52

Sh volichers

When Sylvia saw Rayna come to Emerald Garden to take away the lavender plant, she immediately got the picture.

Sylvia thought, ‘Vivian really has her nose in the air. She thinks she’s too good for Charles.

She should look in the mirror. That nasty scar on her left check makes her look like she crawled out of the abyss. What man would ever want her?

Charles is handsome and has a bright future. If it weren’t for her Phoenix Fate, I would never let Vivian marry Charles.

Go get Cathy,Sylvia said coolly.

Cathy was the maid who used to work in Maple Yard not long ago.

Vivian, paranoid as ever, made up some excuse and swapped out all her servants. Cathy got dumped in the kitchen to do grunt work.

Going from Vivian’s personal maid to just another kitchen drudge, Cathy had really been through the wringer.

When Cathy arrived at Emerald Garden and saw Sylvia, she begged, Lady Sylvia, please, you have to help me. I can’t take it anymore!

Her hands were covered in calluses and blisters, and she was so thin she barely looked like the same girl. Gone was the fresh- faced maid she used to be.

Sylvia was honestly shocked at how much Cathy had changed.

Keep your voice down!Sylvia snapped, frowning, worried someone might overhear. Her beautiful face twisted with

annoyance.

Cathy quickly clapped a hand over her mouth.

Where are those poetry manuscripts I told you to hide?Sylvia asked.

Cathy didn’t know what Sylvia wanted with those poetry manuscripts, but at this point, Sylvia was the only one who could save her. She wouldn’t dare hide a thing from Sylvia.

Cathy replied honestly, They’re inside my pillow. There are a dozen or so poetry manuscripts, all written by Vivian herself. I’m certain.

Sylvia smiled and gently clapped her hands.

Hearing the commotion, Junia came in, leaned in, and whispered something to Cathy before leading her away.

Lady Sylvia, are you really going to have Cathy transferred to Emerald Garden?Junia asked.

Sylvia scoffed, Transfer her? Please, I was just bluffing. Just keep her happy for now. Once she points the finger at Vivian, ship her off to the country estate and make sure to cut out her tongue so she won’t spread any rumors.

To the other ladies, Sylvia always seemed gentle and warm, always had a smile for everyone, and never so much as scolded a servant. Who would’ve thought a few casual words from her could decide Cathy’s whole future?

Junia had been serving Sylvia for years. She wasn’t as close to Sylvia as Holly used to be, but she was still part of Sylvia’s inner circle and had handled plenty of shady business for her. No way would she ever defy Sylvia’s word.

Three days later, after her reflection was over, Sylvia left Emerald Garden and went straight to Beatrice’s courtyard to pay her respects.

Sylvia was dressed simply, without makeup, and looked much thinner than before. She stood and bowed in the hall, holding a cup. When she saw Vivian, her eyes reddened with guilt.

Sylvia said, Beatrice, I’ve reflected on my actions, and I know I was wrong. I don’t dare ask for your forgiveness, but I hope you’ll give me a chance to make amends to Vivian.

After all, she’s the child I carried in my womb for ten months. No matter what, the blood tie between mother and daughter can never truly be severed.”

As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes, making her look especially pitiable.

Vivian raised an eyebrow, sneering inwardly.

The System couldn’t help but feel grossed out. It said, Sylvia really has no shame. Her daughter is Celia, not you.”

We don’t have any proof. Even if we spill the truth, nobody’s gonna buy it,Vivian replied, massaging her sore temples.

The System couldn’t help but spill the beans. It said, Actually, if Celia’s Fortune Points drop below fifty, we’ll have a shot at flipping the script.

Vivian raised an eyebrow, looking genuinely taken aback. She’d already snatched back one Golden Plume, but other than Celia losing some Fortune Points, nothing much had changed.

Vivian thought, So if Celia’s Fortune Points drop below fifty, will something major happen?

As if reading her mind, the System explained, The first five Golden Plumes were snatched from you by the Cuckoo Child right after she was born, driven purely by instinct.

That was when the FateReversal Enchantment latched onto you, and those five Golden Plumes became the very foundation of Celia’s Fortune.

Once her Fortune Points drop below fifty, it’s like shaking her very foundation. The Cuckoo Child won’t be able to keep up her current appearance anymore.

Vivian thought back carefully and found that Celia really did resemble Flora now.

She’ll start looking more and more like Sylvia, won’t she?Vivian asked.

The System didn’t deny it.

Vivian picked up a tissue and gently dabbed at the corners of her eyes, as if moved by Sylvia’s lies. She called out softly, Mom.” She bent down and carefully helped Sylvia straighten up.

No matter what, as a daughter, she couldn’t just stand by and watch her own mother bow in repentance. If she did nothing, word would soon spread through Aurestus that Vivian was an unfilial daughter.

By then, no one would want to marry into Aurea Manor, leaving Beatrice with no choice but to marry Vivian off to Charles.

People would talk about how Celia was the picture of filial piety, even giving her blood to save her mom, while Vivian made her own mom bow and beg for forgiveness.

Then Vivian would end up being Celia’s stepping stone for nothing.

Vivian wasn’t about to fall for Sylvia’s tricks.

Sylvia said, My dear, I was out of my mind before and treated you so badly. From now on, I’ll make it up to you a thousand times over. I swear, you’ll never have to suffer another moment of injustice.

As she spoke, she clutched Vivian’s hand, tears streaming down her face as she poured out her regrets, looking for all the

world like she’d truly changed.

But Vivian knew that old habits die hard. Some people just weren’t built to change.

All Sylvia ever cared about in this life was Celia. She’d do anything to put her real daughter on the throne.

Sacrificing herself wouldn’t even make her blink. So what was it to her to throw away a girl she didn’t love, wasn’t even related to, and whom she only called daughterfor appearances?

Vivian feigned emotion, quietly sobbing as Sylvia wrapped an arm around her shoulders in a show of closeness.

Beatrice glanced at Sylvia, hoping she’d truly changed.

Beatrice thought, ‘Vivian has suffered so much. She has grown up under the shadow of her mother’s favoritism toward her legitimate sister, and now, with her ruined looks, even her prospects for marriage have suffered.

Beatrice just wished Vivian could have a happier life.

Sylvia pulled Vivian down to sit beside her, wiped away her tears, and smiled. She said, Time really flies. Vivian’s already reached marriageable age. I wish I could keep her at home a bit longer, but I’m afraid of delaying her prospects.

Her eyes flickered as she turned to Beatrice and asked, Beatrice, I wonder which family you’re considering for an alliance with us?

Sylvia didn’t dare mention Charles by name, afraid of raising Beatrice’s suspicions.

I haven’t decided yet,” Beatrice said, setting down her cup.

Flora twirled her bracelet and said, Didn’t you mention before, Sylvia, that you have a nephew in your family who’s about the right age?

Sylvia forced a laugh, didn’t dare say a word. She stole a glance at Beatrice, who was just resting her eyes. She felt a jolt of anxiety.

Flora said, If that boy from the Linden family really is talented and has good character, he could be a good match for Vivian. Even if his family isn’t wealthy, I’ll just add to Vivian’s dowry. I won’t let our girl suffer.
