Enoch had long been seen as unlucky by the royal family. High–born though he was, he had constantly faced slander and assassination attempts.
He was naturally wary, always on guard like a wild animal, but Vivian was different. He trusted her, certain that she would never lie to him.
Still, Enoch said, “After the performance, come with me to the Hunting Palace.”
Vivian lowered her voice in agreement.
Soon, the performance ended. Edward held onto Vivian’s arm, clearly not wanting her to leave.
“Edward, stop,” Enoch said, his expression darkening.
Edward had been personally taught by Enoch since childhood, so he was always a bit intimidated by him. Afraid of upsetting Enoch, he reluctantly let go.
“Vivian, when will you come to the Fletcher residence again? I really miss you,” Edward said, eyes wide and pleading.
He was the same age as Simon, and seeing him made Vivian’s heart soften.
She promised. “When I’m free next time, I’ll watch a performance with you.”
Edward was overjoyed and jumped high, while Paulina quickly restrained him and told him to calm down.
Paulina said, “Vivian, thank you again for saving this little troublemaker. Conrad and I prepared a gift for you. I hope you’ll like it.”
As Paulina spoke, she took a box from the maid and handed it to Vivian,
Vivian said, “Mrs. Fletcher, you don’t have to-”
However, Paulina cut Vivian off before she could finish. “Nothing in this world is more precious than my son’s life. Please take it.”
Vivian sighed and nodded, knowing she couldn’t refuse.
After leaving the Fletcher residence, Enoch took her to the Hunting Palace.
Enoch summoned his servants and ordered them to gather all the insect–repellent pills purchased recently; there were over a hundred different kinds..
“Take a look. Do you see the kind of pills you mentioned?” Enoch asked.
Vivian stepped forward, bent down, and carefully searched through the pile. And soon, she found several pale pills hidden among the spices.
“Your Highness, it’s here,” Vivian said.
As Vivian turned to go back, she stumbled over a rock lying on the ground and went tumbling forward.
Thankfully, Enoch caught her just in time.
Vivian’s nose bumped against Enoch’s chest, firm and solid. She felt a weird ache and embarrassment and couldn’t help shedding a few tears.

“That bad, huh?” Enoch frowned, thinking she was being a bit dramatic.
Through her tears, she shook her head, her eyes blurred and softened.

Vivian took a deep breath. Once her breathing steadied, she opened her palm, revealing several small, round pills, unremarkable in appearance.
“Your Highness, should I call for the royal physician?” she asked.
“No need,” Enoch shook his head.
He gave a quiet order to the guards, then walked ahead. After a few steps, he saw Vivian still standing there, so he said, “What are you waiting for?”
Vivian mumbled a reply and hurried after Enoch, passing through a door to a rather secluded room.
The place seemed close to the stables.
Enoch pushed open the door, letting sunlight spill in. There was nothing inside except an iron cage, containing about five squeaking rabbits.
Enoch raised his hand, and the guards quickly covered their mouths and noses. They split open the pills and sprinkled the Deadly Nightshade powder into the cage.
At first, the rabbits in the cage staggered about, as if drunk, swaying unsteadily.
However, as more Deadly Nightshade powder was added, they became violently agitated, letting out piercing screams and clawing at the cage until blood appeared.
The other rabbits, sensing the blood, lunged at the wounded ones, tearing them apart.
The scene was savage beyond words.
Vivian pressed her lips and closed her eyes.
She thought, ‘Even such docile creatures could become so vicious. I can’t imagine the consequences if it were adult men instead.‘
Seeing this, Enoch let out a terrifying laugh. “Good. They really went all out just to snatch the title of crown prince from me. What a dirty trick.”
Even though Enoch was standing a good distance from the cage during the test, he couldn’t help but breathe in some of the Deadly Nightshade powder.
His eyes were bloodshot, veins bulging at his temples, and his usually flawless face looked terrifyingly twisted.
Vivian rushed to the fountain, hauled up a glass of freezing water, and without hesitation, splashed it right in Enoch’s face.
She moved so fast that even the guards and Judith didn’t have time to react.
The shock of the icy water snapped Enoch back to his senses instantly.
Soaked through, his crown crooked, stripped of usual icy dignity, his handsome features were clearly visible.
Vivian couldn’t tear her eyes away, completely stunned.
She bit her tongue, came back to herself, and asked, “Your Highness, are you feeling better?”
“Miss Snyder, you have quite the courage,” Enoch said. He took the cloth from the guard and slowly wiped the water from

He moved slowly but kept his eyes on Vivian, expression unreadable.

“Your Highness, I had no other choice. Please forgive me, Vivian said softly.
“Fine. Since you found the pills, I forgive you,” Enoch replied.
Enoch walked up to her, and a drop of water from his hair fell onto her hand.
Vivian shivered, wanting to lower her head, but Enoch caught her chin and lifted it.
Enoch squinted at her, eyes fixed. He said seriously, “That scar on your face is an eyesore.”
Ever since Vivian was a kid, she had suffered all kinds of humiliation because of the scar on her left cheek.
She never really cared about her looks, but Sylvia’s favoritism made her constantly want to outdo Celia.
After coming back and learning that Sylvia wasn’t her mother, her clinging to maternal love vanished entirely.
She thought that maybe she just wasn’t cut out for close family ties.
Compared with all she’d suffered, Enoch’s comment didn’t faze her. Calmly, she said, “Your Highness, if you think it’s ugly, then just don’t look.”
Enoch was stunned.
As night began to fall, Vivian excused herself and made to leave.
Just as she crossed the door, Enoch’s voice rang out behind her. “I’ll find a top physician to remove that scar from your face.”
Vivian said softly, “Thank you, Your Highness.“.
After leaving the Hunting Palace, Vivian and Judith climbed into the car. She was feeling tired, so she rested for a bit before finally opening the gift Paulina had given her.
It was a landscape painting.
Unlike Celia, who was well–known for her talent, Vivian had never studied under any famous teacher.
She’d only spent a few years at a prestigious school, and after that, she just taught herself by flipping through the books in Aurea Manor’s library.
She’d never had any formal training, so when she managed to sketch Dylan’s face before, it was all thanks to her amazing
memory.
At first glance, the painting seemed ordinary; the lines were even somewhat crude, and paired with the already yellowed paper, it appeared plain and unremarkable.
However, when Vivian saw the signature at the bottom, she couldn’t help but stare in shock.
It showed that the painting had been done by Arthur one spring many years ago.
Vivian thought for a while and found that Arthur was the grandfather of the esteemed scholar whom Celia learned from.
