Samantha never thought of herself as someone who cried easily. But for some reason, Leonardo's rejection made her throat tighten and her eyes well up. She didn't know when she had become someone who could be brought to tears so easily.
She huffed, asking, "Why are you picking on me too? Does it make you feel powerful bullying someone like me?"
"I'm not picking on you," Leonardo said, puzzled.
"Then what are you trying to do?" Samantha asked.
"Our discussion isn't over yet," Leonardo replied.
Samantha continued to dodge the matter, unwilling to face it. "There's nothing left to discuss…"
"Samantha!" Leonardo's voice sharpened like he was trying hard to stay calm. "Can you just talk to me properly?"
Samantha kept her lips pressed together. Defiance filled her gaze, but the tears kept streaming down. It was like she was determined to fight him to the end.
The tension sat between them for a long time.
Leonardo grabbed a tissue from the backseat and tossed it to her. "This is what you agreed to. If you back out now, you'll have to deal with the consequences."
"Why do you insist on dragging me into this mess?" Samantha asked.
"Because if I marry Yvette, there's no way I can get a divorce. But with you, I call the shots," Leonardo explained.
Samantha pressed her lips together. So that's what it was. It was because she was easier to handle and control. That was a perfectly good reason.
"Understood." She lowered her eyes, a broken look flickering in them. She knew she couldn't win against Leonardo, so all she could do was accept it.
When the door opened, Layla popped a potato chip into her mouth and said, "You have no idea what I made for dinner tonight. It was delicious, and you didn't even come home to eat! You missed a feast, I'm telling you."
Samantha's eyes grew even more red-rimmed. Though the finger food at the Shaw residence was delicate, beautiful, and tasty, the people there were infuriating. She had barely had a chance to eat much, and the whole ordeal had left her absolutely drained.
This place was still the most comfortable and warm.
Samantha sniffled. "But I'm starving. Is there still anything left?"
Layla's eyes were glued to the TV, but as soon as she heard Samantha's tearful voice, she immediately turned to look at the latter.
The moment she saw Samantha's bloodshot eyes, she immediately lost it. "What happened? Who bullied you?"
"No one…" Samantha murmured.
