Ethan glanced at Layla, who was sitting in the backseat, through the rearview mirror. Layla's gaze was unwavering, showing no hint that she was joking. Seeing that, he knew that she was serious.
Ethan responded with the same level of seriousness. "I haven't encountered a case that requires treatment for a hopeless romantic. If it had to be treated, brain surgery wouldn't help. Instead, they'd need psychological counseling."
"I see," Layla replied, then turned to give Samantha a long, meaningful look.
Samantha was rendered speechless. The hint was pretty obvious. She wished she could just vanish from the face of the earth.
The atmosphere during the drive was quite pleasant, and soon they arrived at their destination.
Layla was the first to get out of the car. She walked around to Samantha's side and extended her hand to help her. "Samantha, be careful. Let me help you up."
Samantha nodded, preparing to get out of the car, but then she saw Ethan also getting out. He quickly walked over to her other side, his tone laced with concern. "Let me do it."
Layla immediately rejected, saying, "You don't need to get out. I'll help her back."
"Are you sure you can manage on your own?"
"Yeah..."
Samantha glanced at Ethan, then at Layla, and immediately understood Ethan's intentions.
Hence, she quickly played the part of a weak, fragile person, leaning softly against Layla. Her voice carried with a hint of feebleness. "Layla, I suddenly... feel a bit dizzy."
Layla was shocked at Samantha's sudden "weakness" and almost lost her grip on her. "Hey, Samantha, what's wrong? You were fine just a moment ago..."
Samantha thoughtfully stood up, cradling her head. "I feel like I'm about to faint. I'm going to my room to rest. You two can continue your conversation."
With that, she quickly made herself scarce.
Ethan was at a loss for words. Samantha had escaped so quickly that it almost felt too fake. But he knew Samantha was helping him, and he was genuinely grateful for her support today.
Layla came out of the kitchen, holding a glass of water.
Ethan sat up straight on the couch, took a deep breath, and finally made up his mind. "Are you... purposely avoiding me?"
As he asked the question, he already had a rough idea of the answer deep down. Ever since his conversation with Samantha last time, he'd been trying to find ways to get closer to Layla, looking for different ways to express his feelings.
