It was like winning a 50-dollar coupon in a raffle, only to find out it was only valid on a Porsche. It barely made a difference. But a discount of 15 thousand dollars on its own was already a lot of money.
"Thank you." Ethan didn't say anything else. He picked up the pen and quickly signed his name on the paperwork.
"Alright. You'll need to pay a deposit of around 50 thousand dollars. Please follow me to make the payment," Layla said politely.
"Okay," Ethan replied.
As Layla led Ethan away, she looked at Samantha and said, "Wait for me in the break room."
"Alright." Samantha nodded and quickly headed back into the break room.
Layla clearly didn't want her talking to Ethan. But as Layla's friend, Samantha definitely wanted to get to the bottom of things.
It was such a headache.
On the way past the snack bar, Samantha grabbed a few more treats. She had slept in that day and only had the breakfast Layla left for her. She skipped lunch too, so she had to snack a bit to fill her stomach.
Samantha lounged on the couch in the break room and scrolled through her phone. She wasn't sure how much time had passed before Layla finally came back.
It was almost 5:00 pm, nearing the end of the workday. When Layla returned, her expression was calm. Samantha couldn't tell how she was feeling.
Layla asked, "Is there anything you feel like eating tonight?"
"I'm fine with anything," Samantha replied.
"I'll take you to somewhere fun," Layla said.
"Sure!" Not wanting to be a buzzkill, Samantha agreed right away.
…
"What's wrong with it? If men can go to clubs and pick up women, why can't we go to a male escort nightclub? We've been letting men get away with too much!" Layla retorted.
Samantha had to admit she had a point. "You make it sound pretty reasonable…"
"Let's go check it out. It's my treat. We're the customers today, so if you don't like them, tell them to get lost. I've got your back!" Layla said.
Samantha noticed a flicker of sadness in Layla's eyes. She then realized that the latter had come here to numb herself with alcohol and men. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something to comfort Layla. But after a brief pause, she couldn't bring herself to speak.
Maybe it was best not to mention Ethan right now.
Samantha firmly said instead, "Alright, let's go in and take a look!"
"That's my bestie!" Layla laughed. "Let's do this!"
Samantha was willing to go to any lengths for her best friend. And she thought that it was a stroke of luck that Leonardo wasn't around.
