David locked eyes with Alicia, his stare cutting like a knife. The charming, easy-going guy everyone used to know was gone. In his place stood someone sharp and unyielding. “I said the woman I’m going to marry is Alicia.”
No more forced smiles or acting innocent.
The look he gave her made her pulse skip. She’d always known that David wouldn’t take betrayal lying down. That was why she’d settled things up with Austin before David returned and slipped Aria a quiet assist on the side.
Still, she’d badly underestimated how deep his feelings went-those three years hadn’t been an act.
Then, a steady male voice interrupted the tension. “That’s not happening. Alicia and I are already married.”
Every jaw in the room dropped.
“What?!” Aria’s shriek cracked the silence. Wait, isn’t Alicia pursuing David? When does Austin come into the picture?
Austin came loaded for war. He yanked a marriage certificate from his suit jacket and tossed it onto the table.
Alicia blinked. Oh, really? Who actually carries that stuff around?
His voice stayed calm. “We’re legally married.”
Game over.
David stared at the paper, then at the ring flashing on Alicia’s finger. His mind went blank. Less than a month ago, she was down on one knee asking me to marry her. Now she’s wearing another man’s ring. How did it flip that fast? His chest burned; his eyes went blood-red.
Richard stepped forward, smooth as ever. “Alicia and Austin are an ideal pair. Steven and I have already consented to their marriage. Beyond joining the families, our companies are also considering a long-term partnership.”
That was the nail in the coffin. Kyana and Aria slumped in their seats, overwhelmed-everything they had plotted was now ruined. Alicia didn’t bother with their strategies; she went directly for victory.
Then, Steven reached for a velvet jewelry box he’d kept ready. Inside lay a set of emeralds so vibrant they seemed alive. Still, the price was not what mattered. What truly mattered was what it symbolized.
“Alicia,” he spoke quietly, holding out a bracelet. “This was Austin’s mother’s favorite set. We had him late, and she passed soon after he was born. She never saw him grow up or fall in love. He’s kept everyone at a distance since her passing. You’re the first person to break through that wall, and I can see why. Just look after each other, okay?”
He gently slid the bracelet onto her wrist. “From now on, you’re my daughter-in-law.”
Alicia brushed her fingers over the incredible gems. “Thanks. I really love it.”

David could barely stand the sight.
Steven waved him over. “David, come meet your new aunt.”
David froze, then emitted a bitter laugh. “Aunt? Not a chance.” He spun around and walked away.
“Mr. David, wait-” Aria grabbed his sleeve.
Wrong move.

“Get out of my way,” he snapped, pushing her aside and causing her to fall to the floor before he stormed out without a glance.
The loser of the night couldn’t have been clearer.
Alicia bit the inside of her cheek to stop smiling and bent to help. “Aria, you okay?”
An hour ago, Aria texted her a smug bed photo-meant to taunt her. She boasted about having the guy and soon becoming David’s wife.
Now the universe had handed her a slap in silence.
Aria’s face twisted, and she shoved Alicia back. “Save your fake sympathy!”
Alicia wobbled on her heels and nearly lost her balance, but Austin steadied her by the waist. “Easy,” he murmured.
