Chapter 59 Bruises and Boundaries
Alicia went on, “If you’re still hanging onto some fantasy that we’ll get back together, let me make this real clear-Austin or no Austin, you and I were never going to work. It’s over. Got it?”
David’s lips parted, but no words came. What could he possibly say? Cheating wasn’t something to be fixed; once it was done, it was final.
“Alicia…” he muttered weakly.
She didn’t even look at him. “Don’t.”
Then she turned to Austin. “You okay?”
“I’m fine,” Austin replied easily, giving her hair a playful ruffle. “Guess that means no dinner date tonight.”
That small gesture felt like a dagger twisting in David’s chest. Watching them together hurt more than he wanted to admit. It suddenly clicked-Alicia wasn’t the problem. Austin was.
“Over, huh?” David let out a bitter laugh. “Uncle Austin, she and I were together for three years. You’re nothing but some rebound. She’ll never love you. Give it time-she’ll come back to me.”
Alicia took a pillow and threw it straight at him, shouting, “Get out!”
David’s face hardened. He glared at her, voice low and dark. “I’m not done yet, Alicia. Not now, not ever.”
He stormed out, the door slamming behind him.
Alicia took a deep breath and turned back to Austin. She grabbed a tissue and dabbed gently at the bruise forming along his jawline.
She frowned. Great, now everyone will see this. How can he face clients looking like he just left a bar fight?
Her irritation flared. “Who even punches someone in the face like that? Seriously-how old is he, twelve?
You hurt?”
Austin smirked, knowing full well the punch had done him more good than harm. “Hurts a little. If you blow on it… might help.”
Alicia gave him a look but still leaned in, settling on the couch between his legs. She blew softly on his split lip, the warmth of her breath brushing his skin.
Her scent filled the space-sweet, clean, distracting.
Before she could move away, Austin’s arm slid around her waist, tugging her closer until she was pressed against his chest. His head tilted up, his lips brushing hers in a slow kiss.
It started gently until the taste of blood on her lips made her freeze. She pushed at his chest, but he didn’t move.
“Austin…” she whispered, her pulse racing. David just left. What if he comes back?
Then her thoughts tumbled over each other. The door didn’t even latch when he slammed it. What if someone sees us?
They were legally married, but her heart hadn’t fully joined in. Last night was only their second time together, and doing this openly in broad daylight on the couch felt too much.
Her whole body tensed, every breath shaky.
