Chapter 61 The Morning Kiss
Alicia was utterly drained after the chaos of the previous night; she collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep almost immediately.
When Austin returned to the room, he found her curled up near the edge. On the eight-foot-long bed, she occupied less than seven feet, leaving a wide gap between them.
Is she really that uneasy being near a man?
Austin knew the reason all too well-her parents had scarred her deeply. David had spent three years trying to break through, but just as he succeeded, he hurt her so profoundly that she recoiled further from intimacy.
Without hesitation, Austin drew her back into his arms.
It had always been this way, even when they traveled abroad. The moment he fell asleep, she would slip out of his embrace and edge toward the perimeter, maintaining her distance.
Yet every single time, he would pull her back, unwavering.
It was a silent battle of wills, neither willing to yield.
This time, however, exhaustion conquered her, and she slept soundly in his arms until sunlight crept through the window.
When the first rays touched her face, Alicia squinted, frowning like a kitten, and instinctively raised her hand to shield her eyes-only to brush against warm skin.
She snapped awake, her gaze locking with a man whose lips still bore a faint trace of bruising.
“Morning.”
It wasn’t the first time she’d woken up in his bed, but it was the first time she had woken this close.
Alicia stiffened. “Morning… Mm-”
Before she could finish, Austin leaned in, pressing his lips to hers with an intensity that took her breath away. His mouth tasted of mint, clean and fresh.
The cool mint flavor spread across her mouth.
She knew men always had certain reactions in the morning. Is he trying to…
Alicia’s body stiffened, caught completely off guard, yet he released her, lightly tapping her forehead. “Breakfast’s ready, Come down.”
Her cheeks flamed. What on earth was I thinking?
She had even braced herself for whatever she feared he might do.
Realizing she hadn’t brushed her teeth, she darted to the bathroom, her cheeks burning crimson.
In the mirror, she noticed her flushed cheeks and eyes sparkling with a hint of playful mischief.
He hadn’t done anything.
And yet, breakfast was waiting for her-warm oatmeal topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon and freshly baked bread.
“You made this?” she asked, surprised.
“I appreciate the compliment, but my assistant actually brought it,” he said casually.
