Chapter 64 You Are Perfect
Kyana never imagined that the trick she had relied on countless times would finally betray her.
“Richard, I’m the elder, and I just got struck by someone younger. Am I really supposed to apologize to her?”
“Serves you right for running your mouth!” Richard snapped. He had never held her in high regard, and he wasn’t about to start now.
Even the younger members of the family regarded her as little more than a joke. As Mrs. Gibson, she had always been a ceremonial figurehead-nothing more.
Kyana swallowed her humiliation. Last time, it had been Aria; this time, she had lost to Alicia.
She had gravely underestimated Alicia.
“Alicia, I’m at fault. I shouldn’t have brought up matters better left untouched. Please forgive me,” she said, bending gracefully when circumstances demanded it.
Whatever defeat she had suffered at Alicia’s hands today, she vowed silently, she would repay it tenfold.
Austin turned to Frank, incredulous. “So the one who hurt my wife faces no consequences?”
Frank’s gaze sharpened on Alicia. “You’re ungrateful! Now that you’ve found someone to back you, you push your own father around?”
Apologies were out of the question. Frank stormed off, his sleeves flaring with every stride.
“Frank! Austin, don’t be angry. He’s always been like this. I’ll apologize to Alicia on his behalf,” Kyana interjected hastily, attempting to mediate.
Her two children tugged impatiently at her arms. “Mom, why are you apologizing to someone like that?”
“He’s just a marriage-alliance husband. Does he really need to act so self-important in our family?” Bernard scoffed.
Richard roared once more, and Bernard finally fell silent.
Just as Richard was about to smooth things over, Austin cut in. “Richard, I had no idea my wife had been living like this under your roof. There’s no need to proceed with the wedding discussion. If your family cannot provide the wedding gifts, mine will handle everything. One thing is certain: I will not let my wife endure even the slightest discomfort.”
“Austin, that’s not-”
“Richard, we’re leaving. Do as you will.”
He took Alicia’s hand, their fingers intertwining, and together they left the Gibson estate.
The sharp crash of a glass echoed behind them the instant they stepped outside.
“Do you fools even realize what you’ve done?”
