“When you look in the mirror at night, do you ever scare yourself into having nightmares?”
Rowan felt a chill in her chest.
Celeste’s gaze dropped to her legs, and without warning, she shoved the wheelchair hard. Rowan instinctively sprang to her feet to dodge it.
“So you were faking the limp to trick Patrick!” Celeste sneered, her voice loud and echoing through the hallway.
Patrick turned to look.
Rowan’s face flushed bright red. She wanted to disappear.
She tried to leave, but Celeste grabbed her wrist without mercy. “Aren’t you going to explain yourself to Patrick? How can you live with yourself after lying to him like this? Was this Serena’s idea? Are you just following her lead to mess with him? You’re taking advantage of how loyal and good-hearted he is! Rowan, you’ve really gone bad hanging around Serena!”
Patrick’s expression grew complicated.
“This has nothing to do with Serena!” Rowan was used to being wronged herself, but she would never let someone use this to slander her desk mate.
Celeste’s face was full of mockery. “Not Serena’s idea? So you did it on your own? To help her get revenge? That’s why you made Patrick carry you up and down the stairs every day? He’s already got his mom in the hospital, and you’re still running him around like this? Rowan, you’re evil!”
“I-I didn’t…”
“Oh, really? Then what’s this? Figures—anyone close to Serena turns out rotten!”
“Don’t you dare insult Serena!” Rowan’s eyes filled with tears. “It was my own—”
She looked at Patrick, and suddenly her voice turned firm. “Patrick, I like—”
“You weren’t about to say you like Patrick, were you?”
Celeste cut her off and turned to Patrick.
“First they torture your body, now they’re playing with your feelings. What a perfect way to get revenge. Patrick, don’t tell me you actually fell for her?”
Patrick’s face flushed. The warmth and affection he’d just started to feel for Rowan instantly turned to shame. His pride was crushed. The so-called king of Evervale City had never been toyed with like this.
“Rowan, I thought you were different from Serena. You’ve really let me down!”
His eyes were blazing. “There’s no way I could ever like you! Never! Keep your filthy tricks to yourselves!”
Her innocent heart was trampled to dust.
“I didn’t think you saw me—and Serena—that way. You don’t deserve my love.”
Patrick felt like a thorn had been driven straight into his chest.
Rowan turned to Celeste. “You accused Serena of pushing you down the stairs. You accused her of cheating. Now you’re out here stirring things up again, making everyone misunderstand her. Is that the only way you can feel better about yourself?”
She paused and said the one thing Celeste hated to hear the most.
“Celeste, are you… insecure?”
Smack!
Smack!
Smack!
Rowan was so scared she forgot all about the pain in her face. “Serena, let’s not be mad. No fighting.”
Serena didn’t spare Patrick or Celeste a single glance. She pulled out a bottle of ointment and handed it to Rowan.
Afraid Serena might explode again, Rowan quickly grabbed her and started to leave. But just before turning the corner, she couldn’t help looking back—at Patrick, standing protectively next to Celeste.
“Serena, was I really stupid and embarrassing just now?”
“Yeah, kinda stupid,” Serena replied flatly. Then she added, “And a little embarrassing.”
Rowan had hoped for comfort from her pretty desk mate.
But clearly, her pretty desk mate was a block of iron—one that didn’t bloom.
“It won’t happen again,” she said.
Was her best friend not cool enough, or was her desk mate not sweet enough? Why was she wasting time on a guy who couldn’t even see straight?
No sooner had Serena walked off than Patrick’s phone rang.
“Boss, why are we suddenly doing two sets of Kaplan’s SAT Prep Plus starting today?”
He took a deep breath. “Just do them.”
Zayden had been forced to watch the entire drama unfold. Watching Patrick pretend not to see the truth, handing Celeste off to a nurse for her swollen face, his mood turned cold.
