Meadow’s POV:
My eyes widened. Tyler wasn’t letting me go. I could see it in his eyes. He was ready to kill me. I could feel my face getting hot, and I thrashed as much as the ropes binding me would allow.
“Y… c-can’t k-kill…” I choked out.
“Is that what you think?” he mused.
He couldn’t kill me. He wouldn’t get the money if he did. Alaric wouldn’t surrender whatever amount of money he was asking for if he wasn’t sure I was alive.
Tyler squeezed harder for a few more seconds, and then he finally let go.
I sputtered, trying to take in as much air as I could.
Tyler let out a dark chuckle. “You know, now that I think of it, you’re his wife. Which means your account must be loaded as well. Bet I could get a pretty penny out of it too.”
I didn’t say a word in response as Tyler took his phone out of his pocket again, but my eyes zoned in on the gun in his other pocket. Silently, I continued to drive the ropes over the nail. I could feel it slowly thinning.
I had no idea what I was going to do when I was finally free, but I just had to at least free my hands. I couldn’t even care less about being outnumbered.
Tyler’s phone began to buzz, and he laughed, turning the screen so I could see the numbers displayed on it.
My stomach lurched.
“Looks like your man is ready to collect his bitch.” I remained silent, holding my breath as Tyler answered the call on speaker. “Yeah?” he said lazily. “You ready to do business, Ashford?”
For a short moment, there was nothing but silence on the other end of the line. And then…
“Give the phone to her.”
I couldn’t explain the rush of emotions I felt at the sound of Alaric’s voice. It seemed like so long ago since I last heard it, when it had only been hours.
I wanted… no. I needed him. I needed him to touch me, hold me, tell me everything was going to be okay.
Tyler let out a short laugh. “I don’t work for you anymore. You can’t boss me around… sir,” he added mockingly.
“I have the money,” Alaric said sternly. “Every cent you asked for. And if you want it, which I’m sure you do, you will hand the phone to my wife. Now.”
My pulse thundered in my ears.
“Unfortunately, her hands are… occupied,” Tyler replied, tilting his head at me with a smirk. “But don’t worry, I’ll hold the phone. Go on,” he sneered. “Say hi to your husband.”
My throat closed up.
“Meadow.” Alaric’s voice was firm as ever-harsh enough to shake me up.
When I still didn’t say a word because of how much I was shaking, he spoke again, softer this time even though it was still hard at the edges. “Talk to me, baby.” ‘Baby.’ That shattered something in my chest.
“I-I’m here,” I whispered hoarsely. “I’m here.”
He shoved out a breath of relief, and when he spoke again, his voice was strained. “Are you hurt?”
