Alaric’s POV:
I couldn’t get here fast enough. They had taken her to a completely remote area that took some time to find even though we had the location pinned.
The initial plan was for me to arrive first with the money, and distract Tyler Cross. But the motherfucker was dead, supposedly shot by Juniper.
I did not ever want to recall those few seconds when I thought Meadow was the one who had been shot.
The scariest fucking moment of my life.
I couldn’t lose her. Couldn’t live without her. If anything had happened to Meadow I would’ve burned the city to the ground.
It had almost happened again when we burst through the doors. Tyler would’ve shot Meadow if one of Nolan’s men hadn’t silenced him before he could.
She was here-shaking and crying in my arms. But she was safe. That’s all that mattered.
“I’m right here, baby,” I murmured. However, before the words were completely out, she pushed hard against my chest in a bid to free herself from my arms.
“Juniper…” she broke off, hurrying over to where her sister lay silent… and lifeless.
Looking at the wound on her neck and the amount of blood that had pooled around her, there was no way she was alive. But I let Meadow do what she wanted to do.
I watched her check for a pulse. “No. No, no, no, no, no,” she kept crying as she shook her sister’s body violently. “No, just- she wasn’t going to kill me!” she turned to look up at me. “Alaric, save her, please, please… she didn’t mean to, she couldn’t do it. She…”
My throat thickened with grief. Not at the fact that her sister was dead-I didn’t give a shit about her-but at the look in Meadow’s eyes. At her tears, her cries, her desperate pleas.
“Meadow…” I said gently, crouching down to her level. She looked back at her sister. “Just… just do something,” she gasped. CPR or just…”
I could hear the distant wail of the ambulance which was just arriving, but I was certain they wouldn’t be able to do anything for Juniper.
“She’s gone, baby girl,” I murmured. “We can’t save her. None of us can.”
I began to pull her into my arms again, but she jerked away from me. My stomach twisted.
“Did you do it?” she asked, lips trembling. “Did you have my dad killed in prison? Did you know he was dead?”
”
My jaw ticked. I didn’t want her to get more stressed out than she already was, but I didn’t want to lie to her either. We agreed. No more lies.
“I found out about it earlier today,” I replied tightly. “I didn’t have your father killed-”
