Chapter 129

Isabella’s POV

“Drive.”

:.

My voice sounded colder than I felt as I got into the car with Luca.

Luca didn’t argue. He started the engine immediately, pulling away from the cracked pavement and rusted warehouses, leaving Dominic standing alone in the rearview mirror.

I didn’t look back.

My hands were shaking, not from fear, but from rage.

Silence filled the car for a few seconds before Luca spoke carefully.

“He tried to kill you?”

The question hung between us.

I stared straight ahead at the now dark road unfolding under the headlights. “It’s not that simple.”

“Was that why you left him?” he pressed gently.

I exhaled sharply. “Luca…please. This is not something I’m in the right headspace to talk about right now.”

I just didn’t have the words. Not now. My head felt like it was splitting open with everything I hadn’t said over the years and everything I had just said.

Dominic had sabotaged the one chance I had.

The one thread that could have unraveled this entire lie.

That woman had been ready to talk, ready to give me something concrete. And now she was gone.

You bring more men, you bring trouble, that’s what she had said.

Now she would never contact me again, which meant I was back to square one.

All because Dominic couldn’t resist inserting himself.

Because he couldn’t trust me.

Because his first instinct had been jealousy.

Jealousy.

The hypocrisy of it burned through me.

He could sleep with another woman, get her pregnant, build an entire narrative around responsibility and duty.

And I couldn’t even go somewhere with a man for something work related without him jumping to conclusions?

My jaw clenched.

I couldn’t have asked Dominic to come. If I had, I would’ve had to tell him what I suspected about Alessia. And I wasn’t ready to do that without proof. Not when I didn’t even know how deep this went.

And I couldn’t take anyone from his security team. They would’ve reported back to him immediately.

So I had taken the only other man I trusted.

Luca.

And Dominic had turned it into something ugly.

“If you’re not safe with him,” Luca said quietly, eyes fixed on the road, “you don’t have to stay with him.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“You can stay at my place,” he continued. “You and Mateo. As long as you need.”

The offer was sincere. Solid. Safe.

But it wasn’t realistic.

Besides, I knew both Mateo and I were safer with Dominic than anywhere else. If I could leave Mateo at school and home without worrying about someone coming to hurt him, it was because he had round the clock security ready to take a bullet for him if need be.

“You have to trust me,” I said finally, my voice steadier now. “I’m safer there than anywhere else right now.”

“With him?” Luca asked.

“Yes,” I replied with certainty.

“If I thought being there was harmful, for me or for Mateo, I would’ve left a long time ago,” I said. And that, at least, was the truth. I’d left to protect us both once. I’d do it again in a heartbeat if I felt it was needed.

Luca studied me for a moment, then nodded slowly.

“Alright,” he said. “But if that ever changes…”

“It won’t,” I cut in gently. “And if it does, you’ll be the first to know.”

That seemed to calm him.

After a few minutes, he asked quietly, “Why were you meeting her?”

I hesitated.

There was no point now.

“She was going to give me information,” I said flatly. “Important information.”

“About?”

“It doesn’t matter anymore.” My throat tightened. “She won’t be contacting me again because of what happened today.”

Luca’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. “I can try to track her down for you.”

“No.” I shook my head. “It’s too risky. If she’s scared enough to disappear like that, pushing her will only make it worse.”

He didn’t look convinced, but he let it go.

When we pulled into the villa driveway, the lights were still on.

Dominic was already home. I could see his car in the driveway.

Of course he was.

“Thank you,” I said quietly as I reached for the door handle.

“Isa,” Luca said, stopping me gently. “Whatever this is, don’t handle it alone.”

I gave him a small, tired smile. “I won’t. I know when to ask for help. I did ask you today, didn’t I?”

He didn’t look fully convinced, but didn’t push me either. “Just know that I’m here if you need me. Anytime.”

I nodded, grateful to have a friend like him in my life.

Then I stepped out.

The late evening air somehow felt heavier here.

Dominic was standing just inside the entrance when I walked in. He hadn’t changed. He hadn’t even taken his jacket off.

He looked wrecked.

Not angry. Not defensive.

Wrecked.

For a second, it unsettled me.

“What’s wrong?” I asked before I could stop myself.

Chapter 129

He stared at me like he wasn’t sure I was even real.

“Did you really think that?” he asked quietly.

“Think what?” What was he talking about?

“That I tried to kill you.”

His voice broke slightly on the word kill.

The anger in me flickered.

“I never-” He swallowed. “Isa, did you really believe I would have killed you if you’d stayed?”

The vulnerability in his expression was almost painful to look at.

I hadn’t expected this..

I’d expected another fight. Another argument.

Not this.

“Was that why you left?” he asked, his voice hollow. “Because you thought I would hurt you?”

The question hung in the air between us.

And for the first time that evening, my anger faltered, not because it wasn’t justified, but because the pain in his eyes looked real, too real for me to even look at.

The silence stretched between us.

Neither of us moved.

I hated seeing him this way, so hurt and broken.

And what I hated even more was how much it was affecting me.
