Chapter 151
Isabella’s POV
It had been two days.
Two days since Dominic left the villa.
Two days of pretending I was fine.
Caterina tried not to show it, but I could see it in the way she lingered by the windows in the evenings, like she expected her son to walk up the driveway any second. Mateo asked about him constantly like he had when Dominic had been too busy with work to come home.
“Is Dominic coming tonight?”
“When is he coming back?”
“Is he still working?”
I knelt in front of him that morning while buttoning his school shirt and forced a smile. “He’s just busy with work, amore. He’ll be back soon.”
Soon. The lie tasted bitter.
Dominic had texted me a few times.
How are you?
How’s Mateo?
Did he finish his homework?
I’d replied politely. Short answers. There was no mention of Alessia. No mention of the penthouse. And honestly, I didn’t know if I wanted to hear about it.
Because every time I imagined him there, in the same house as her, feeding her, staying beside her, it felt like someone was slowly carving into my chest.
But I stood by what I’d said.
All or nothing.
I wouldn’t share him.
Even if it meant losing him.
And yet, somewhere deep inside, stubborn and foolish, hope clung.
He wouldn’t choose her. Not like that. Not truly.

Marco was already waiting by the car. He was usually the one who drove us around when Dominic wasn’t there to do it himself.
I quietly slid into the back seat.
The school gates were far behind us when I noticed Marco take a sharp left instead of the usual route towards my office.
I leaned forward slightly. “That’s not the way.”
“There’s a car behind us,” Marco replied calmly.
My stomach tightened. “Vitellis?”
“Possibly.”
I turned in my seat subtly and glanced through the tinted glass. A black sedan. But it was too close.
“They’ve followed before,” I said. “They never did anything.”
Marco’s jaw tightened. “Today feels different.”
The car behind us accelerated. So did Marco, the engine roaring louder. The sedan stayed right behind us.
“Marco-”
“They’re gaining.”
My pulse spiked.
“Call the guards at Mateo’s school,” I said immediately, fumbling for my phone.
“Already did.” His voice remained steady but sharper now as the call connected. He had connected it to the car’s bluetooth.
The voice of the guard at the other end echoed through the car as Marco told him to get more men to guard Mateo and keep him safe.
Safe.
Okay.
He ended the call with a quick command to activate the ‘security response’, whatever that meant. But the car behind us was now dangerously close.
“This doesn’t look like surveillance,” Marco muttered.
“What does it look like?” I whispered.

“An attempt.”

My blood ran cold. The sedan swerved, trying to pull alongside us just as we entered a rather abandoned part of the city.
Then, suddenly, the crack of gunfire shattered the air. The sound was deafening. Glass didn’t shatter. Instead, metallic thuds echoed through the vehicle.
“Duck!” Marco barked.
I dropped down in the back seat, heart slamming violently against my ribs. “Oh my God-”
“They’re firing at the car,” he said. “Stay down!”
More shots. Metal pinged again and again.
My entire body trembled.
“This car is bulletproof,” Marco shouted over the noise. “You’ll be fine! But stay down!”
Fine.
Fine.
But the sound of bullets hitting inches from me didn’t feel fine.
I covered my head instinctively. My mind spiraled. What if they went for Mateo next?
What if-
No.
He’s guarded. He’s safe. He has men there.
Still, terror crawled through my veins like ice.
Marco drove like a man possessed, swerving violently through side streets. But the car behind us didn’t relent.
Another burst of gunfire made my ears ring. I tasted fear in the back of my throat.
“Almost there!” Marco shouted.
The city blurred past. We sped towards what looked like a warehouse.
The large metal doors began lifting before we even had reached them.
This was probably the security response. They were already expecting us.
The moment we crossed the threshold, the doors slammed shut behind us with a heavy metallic crash.
The silence that followed was sudden. Oppressive.
Chapter 151
The engine cut off.
My entire body was shaking. My hands wouldn’t stop trembling.
Marco stepped out first.
My door opened seconds later.
And then, strong arms wrapped around me.
“Isa.”
Dominic. His voice. His scent. His hands on my shoulders. “You’re okay. You’re okay.”
I looked up at him. His face was pale. Anger and fear warred in his eyes.
“I-” My voice broke. “They were shooting.”
“I know.”
His hands cupped my face. “They can’t touch you. Not while I’m breathing.”

The conviction in his tone made something inside me crack. I didn’t realize I was crying until he wiped my cheek with his thumb.
“I thought-” I choked. “I thought they might have gone after Mateo too.”
“He’s safe,” Dominic said immediately. “I’ve doubled security at the school. No one is getting near him.”
I clutched his shirt without thinking. My entire body still vibrated with adrenaline. He pulled me into his chest, holding me tightly. Too tightly. Like if he let go, I might disappear.
“What the hell is happening?” I whispered.
His jaw clenched. “They’re escalating. This is why you can’t leave the villa,” he said. “This is why I can’t let you walk away.”
I understood. It was why I had agreed to stay at the Villa. But I hadn’t realised how real the threat was until today.
I leaned my forehead against his chest, heart still racing.
“I was so scared,” I admitted quietly.
“I know.”
His voice broke slightly.
“I almost lost you once. I will not lose you again.”
My fingers tightened in his shirt, trying to assure myself that everything was fine. I was fine. Mateo was fine.
