Chapter 185

Isabella’s POV

By Sunday morning, I finally felt like myself again.

Not completely, there was still a faint heaviness in my body, a lingering tiredness that hadn’t fully left, but it was manageable now, no longer overwhelming in the way it had been on Friday. The dizziness had subsided, the nausea had softened into something occasional rather than constant, and after spending most of Friday resting and taking it easy on Saturday as well, I could finally breathe without feeling like my body was working against me.

Saturday evening had helped more than I expected. We had stepped out for a short walk-nothing strenuous, just a quiet stroll nearby-and for the first time in days, I had felt normal. Mateo had been his usual cheerful self, pointing out random things, asking questions, talking endlessly, and somewhere between his chatter and the fresh air, the weight inside my chest had eased just a little.

Dominic had texted a few times. Nothing overwhelming. Nothing intrusive. Just simple messages.

How are you feeling? Did you eat? Let me know if you need anything.

I had replied just as simply.

I’m fine. Doing better.

And that had been it. For a change, there was no pushing, no probing, no attempts to draw me into something I wasn’t ready for. And for some reason, that made it easier.

But Sunday morning, he called.

I stared at my phone for a few seconds longer than I should have, watching his name flash on the screen, my thumb hovering over the answer button as hesitation crept in.

A part of me wanted to ignore it, to let it ring out, to buy myself more time. But another part of me knew that I couldn’t keep avoiding him forever. Not now. Not after everything that had happened.

So I answered. “Hello?”

“Isa.” His voice was softer than usual, almost careful. “How are you feeling?” he asked immediately. “Are you okay? Do you need anything?”

There was no pretense. No distance. Just concern, genuine and unfiltered. And I felt it warm something inside my chest. More than I expected to.

“I’m okay,” I said, my voice gentler than it had been in days. “I’m feeling much better now.”

There was a brief pause on the other end, like he was taking that in. “Good,” he said quietly. “That’s good.”

Another pause. Then, “Would you like to meet?” The question came carefully, measured, as if he was testing the ground before stepping onto it.

“I won’t force anything,” he added quickly, almost immediately. “And I won’t show up unexpectedly. I know 1 -” he stopped briefly, then continued, “I know I’ve put you under stress, and I don’t want to do that again.”

Something about the way he said it, so deliberate, so aware, made something soften inside me despite everything.

It was almost cute. The way he was trying. The way he was choosing his words so carefully, like he didn’t want to break something fragile between us.

“I would like that,” I said quietly.

‘And I meant it.

Because as much as everything between us was complicated, we needed to talk. About the baby. About what came next. About everything.

Relief seemed to pass through him, even over the phone. “Okay,” he said. “Would you like to have dinner with me?”

I hesitated for a second.

Then he added, “I’d love it if Mateo came too.”

That made my decision easier.

“Let me ask him,” I said.

I pulled the phone slightly away from my ear.

“Mateo,” I called out.

He looked up from where he was sitting at the table. “Yes?”

“Do you want to have dinner with Dominic today?”

His face lit up instantly. “Yes!”

I smiled faintly.

“Okay,” I said, bringing the phone back to my ear. “We’ll come.”

“I’ll pick you up at six,” he said.

“Alright.”

The call ended shortly after that. And for a moment, I just stood there, staring at my phone, processing, feeling.

Something unfamiliar stirred inside me. A quiet anticipation. But I shook it off gently and walked towards the

table.

“Was that Dominic?” Mateo asked, already curious.

“Yes,” I replied, sitting down across from him. “We’re having dinner with him today.”

Mateo grinned. “I like him.”

The simplicity of it made me pause for a second. There was something about the way Mateo gravitated towards him, effortless and natural, even though they hadn’t been meeting as frequently as before that made me smile. It was like the connection was already there, even if the truth behind it wasn’t.

It made my chest tighten slightly.

Because one day, he would know. And somehow, I knew it wouldn’t surprise him.

“Can I ask you something?” I said, picking up my glass.

“Hmm?”

“How would you feel about having a brother or a sister?”

He froze. Then, his eyes widened. “Really?”

I smiled softly. “Maybe.”

He practically jumped out of his chair. “I would be the best big brother in the world!”

I laughed despite myself. “I know you would.”

“When is the baby coming?” he asked immediately.

“In about eight months,” I said.

He frowned slightly. “That’s too long.”

I smiled again. “It’ll go by faster than you think.”

“I can’t wait,” he said, already excited.

Maria, who had been listening quietly, stepped closer.

“Congratulations, Isa,” she said warmly.

I looked at her in surprise. “You’re not surprised?”

She smiled knowingly. “I had my doubts,” she admitted. “Your eating habits changed. The way you reacted to food, I’ve seen it before.”

I felt my cheeks warm slightly.

“I didn’t want to say anything until you knew for sure,” she added gently.

I nodded, a small smile forming on my lips. “Thank you.”

There was a strange sense of calm, of quiet happiness. Despite everything. Despite the chaos. Despite the uncertainty.

And as I sat there, watching Mateo excitedly plan how he would take care of his future sibling, I couldn’t help but feel something else too.

A small, hesitant anticipation.

Because later in the evening. I was going to see Dominic.

I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about that, but I had a feeling that it was going to be good evening.
