Chapter 189

Dominic’s POV

The silence after her question lingered longer than I wanted it to.

Will that ever be possible?

I didn’t answer right away, not because I didn’t want to, but because I knew the truth wouldn’t sound the way she needed it to. And I had promised myself I wouldn’t lie to her again.

I stepped a little closer, my voice steady even if everything inside me felt anything but. “The only thing I can do right now,” I said slowly, “is promise you that I’ll try my best.”

It wasn’t enough. I knew it the moment the words left my mouth.

Isabella didn’t respond. She just looked at me, quiet, and unreadable, her expression softer than before but still guarded, still holding that distance she refused to let me cross.

And I couldn’t blame her. Not after everything.

I exhaled quietly, shifting the conversation before it sank deeper into something neither of us was ready to handle tonight.

“When do you want to see a gynecologist?” I asked.

Her gaze flickered slightly, the question grounding her. “Tomorrow evening,” she said after a moment. “I can call and-”

“I’ll handle it.” The words came out before she could finish, instinctive, immediate.

“I’ll make the appointment,” I continued, already thinking ahead. “You won’t have to worry about anything. I’ll let you know the time, and I’ll come pick you up.”

She blinked, clearly caught off guard by the speed of it.

Then, she chuckled, the sound soft and light, like music to my ears. It did something strange to my chest.

“You don’t have to do all that,” she said, though there was no real resistance in her voice.

“I want to,” I replied simply.

There was a small pause. Then she nodded. “Okay.”

That was it. No argument. No pushback. And somehow, that felt like more than I deserved.

I hesitated for a second before asking the next thing. “Does Mateo know?”

Her expression softened immediately.

“Yes,” she said. “He’s very excited about having a sibling.”

A faint smile tugged at my lips before I could stop it. Of course, he was. That boy had more heart than most men I knew.

I moved without thinking then, my hand reaching out, wanting to close that distance between us, even if just a little. But before I could do that though, she stepped back, not dramatically, not harshly, but just enough to sting.

My hand stilled mid-air before I slowly let it fall.

“We might be having a child together,” she said quietly, her voice careful, measured. “But there are still too many complications.”

I didn’t say anything.bBecause I knew what was coming next.

“There’s still Alessia,” she added.

The name sat between us like something poisonous.

I clenched my jaw slightly before speaking. “What if there wasn’t?”

Her brows furrowed, confusion flashing across her face. “What?”

“What if there wasn’t,” I repeated, more firmly this time. “What if I didn’t marry her?”

Silence. Then, “What are you saying?”

I exhaled slowly, running a hand through my hair before meeting her gaze again.

“I’m postponing the wedding,” I said. “As long as I can. I need time to find the mole, stabilize everything, make sure the ground beneath us isn’t shifting.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, trying to understand where I was going with this.

“And then?” she asked.

“And then I end it.”

The words landed heavy between us.

She stared at me, clearly not expecting that. “You think it’s that simple?” she asked quietly.

“No,” I said immediately. “It’s not. But it’s necessary.”

I held her gaze, not letting her look away.

“I need you to be patient with me, Isa,” I added, my voice lower now. “Just give me time to fix this the right way, please.”

She let out a small breath, something between a sigh and a quiet, frustrated laugh.

“See,” she said, shaking her head slightly. “That’s exactly what I mean.”

My chest tightened at the dejected expression on her face.

“Why can’t we just be normal?” she continued, her voice soft but edged with something deeper. “Why does everything have to be so complicated? Why does there always have to be a plan, a strategy, a war in the background?”

Her eyes met mine again.

“This isn’t the life I want, Dominic.”

The words didn’t hit like an accusation. They hit like truth.

And the worst part? I agreed with her.

I didn’t want this either. Not like this. Not anymore.

For a brief moment, my mind went somewhere I didn’t usually allow it to go.

Away from all of this. Away from the constant calculation, the weight, the responsibility. To something simpler. Her. Mateo. This baby. A home that didn’t feel like a fortress. Evenings that didn’t come with reports of threats and bloodshed. Weekends that didn’t require security teams and contingency plans.

Just life. Normal. Peaceful. Mine. Ours.

The thought lingered longer than it should have. Long enough to feel dangerous. Because it wasn’t that simple. It never would be. The organization wasn’t just something I did. It was something I had been born into, built into. It carried generations behind it-decisions, alliances, blood.

And even now, after everything I had tried to change, to clean, to steer in a different direction, all the legitimate businesses I’d tried to start over the years, it still wasn’t something I could just walk away from.

Lives depended on me. My men. Their families.

The structure I held together wasn’t just power, it was survival.

I couldn’t just up and leave. At least not without putting someone else in charge. Not without making sure it didn’t collapse. Not without a plan.

And even then, my enemies wouldn’t simply forget. The Vitellis were just one name. There were others. Waiting. Watching. People who would come after me simply because they could. Because they wanted to. Leaving wouldn’t erase the target on my back.

And if I wasn’t careful, it wouldn’t erase the target on theirs either.

My jaw tightened slightly as I forced my thoughts back to the present. Back to her.

“I just need time,” I said quietly. “And patience from you.”

Her expression didn’t soften the way I wanted it to.

“I will try,” I continued, holding her gaze. “To give you that life. To give our children that life.”

There was a pause. And then she nodded.

But I saw it. The doubt, clear as day on her face. She didn’t believe me. And she had every reason not to.

Something settled heavily in my chest at that realization.

I had built this. Every wall. Every distance. Every reason she had to question me.

And now, I had to tear it down. Slowly, and carefully, without breaking everything in the process.

I exhaled quietly, letting the weight of it sit where it belonged.

“It’s late,” I said after a moment, my voice softer now. “You should get some rest. You guys can sleep here tonight. I can take you back in the morning.”

She nodded again, more easily this time. “Good night, Dominic.”

“Good night, Isa.”

For a second, neither of us moved. And then she turned and walked towards the guest room.

The door closed softly behind her.

And just like that, the warmth from earlier faded, leaving me alone in the quiet with my thoughts, with everything I had promised.

And everything I still had to prove.
