Isabella’s POV

The clinic smelled faintly of antiseptic and something floral that tried, unsuccessfully, to soften it

I sat beside Dominic in the waiting area, my hands folded tightly in my lap, my fingers twisting together without me even realizing it. The room was quiet, almost too quiet, filled with other women who looked far

calmer than I felt.

Or maybe they weren’t. Maybe they were just better at hiding it.

I shifted slightly in my seat, my eyes drifting to the reception desk, then to the door that led inside, then back to my hands again.

Stop. You’re overthinking, I told myself firmly.

But I couldn’t stop. Because this felt familiar in a way that made my chest tighten.

These appointments. These rooms. The waiting. It felt like I had been here before.

Except last time, I had been alone.

I stole a glance at Dominic. He sat beside me, composed as always, his posture relaxed but his attention sharp. He hadn’t said much since we arrived, but I could feel it, that quiet awareness of his, like he was tracking everything without making it obvious. Including me.

“Isa.”

I blinked, realizing I had been staring at nothing. “Yes?”

“You’re gripping your hands too tight.”

I looked down. He was right.

I loosened them slightly, exhaling under my breath. “I’m fine,” I said automatically.

His gaze didn’t move from me.

“I didn’t ask if you were fine,” he said quietly, “I just noticed that you are nervous.”

A small, humorless breath left me. “Yes,” I agreed, because again, there was no point pretending.

His expression softened just a fraction. “That’s normal.”

I nodded, but the tightness in my chest didn’t ease.

Because it wasn’t just nerves. It was memory.

Before I could spiral further, my name was called.

“Isabella Russo?”

I stood immediately, my body reacting before my mind could catch up.

Dominic stood with me. Of course, he did.

The doctor’s office was smaller than I expected. Clean, organized, impersonal in the way medical spaces often were. The doctor herself was calm, professional, her tone steady as she went through the usual questions.

Last menstrual cycle. Symptoms. Medical history.

I answered automatically, my voice sounding distant to my own ears, like I was slightly outside myself, watching this happen instead of living it.

Until, she asked, “Previous pregnancies?”

My throat tightened.

“One,” I said.

I didn’t look at Dominic. I didn’t need to. I could feel the shift beside me anyway.

The doctor nodded, making notes, moving on as if it were just another line on a chart.

But for me, it wasn’t. Nothing about this was.

After a few more questions, she explained the next step.

“We’ll do an early ultrasound,” she said. “It’s still very early, so we’re mostly just confirming placement and progression.”

Early. Right.

I lay back on the examination bed, staring at the ceiling as the cold gel touched my skin, making me flinch slightly.

“Relax,” the doctor said gently.

I tried. I really did.

But my entire body felt tense, my mind already racing ahead.

What if something’s wrong?

What if-

“Alright,” the doctor murmured, her focus shifting to the screen.

I turned my head slightly, my eyes following hers. And there it was. Or at least something was.

The doctor pointed at a small, dark shape on the screen. It was barely anything. Just a tiny circle.

“That’s the gestational sac,” the doctor said.

I stared at it. That was it? That small? That fragile?

:.

My chest tightened unexpectedly. It didn’t look like a baby. It didn’t feel real.

And yet, it was.

“Everything looks appropriate for this stage,” the doctor continued. “It’s still very early, so we won’t see much more yet. We’ll monitor progression over the next couple of weeks.”

Her voice faded slightly in the background. Because I couldn’t stop looking at the screen. At that tiny, almost invisible beginning of something that was about to change everything.

I didn’t realize Dominic had moved closer until I felt him beside me.

His presence grounded me, a steadying force.

I glanced at him, but he wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at the screen. At that tiny shape. And there was something in his expression I hadn’t seen before.

Something quiet, almost reverent. Like it mattered. Like it already meant something to him.

That did something to me.

Something soft. Something painful. Something that made my chest ache in a way I couldn’t explain.

The rest of the appointment passed in a blur.

Blood tests were discussed. Supplements prescribed. Follow-ups scheduled.

I nodded at all the right moments, responded when needed, but my mind stayed fixed on that image.

That small, fragile beginning.

When it was over, I sat up slowly, my movements careful, my thoughts still catching up.

“Everything looks good,” the doctor said with a reassuring smile. “We’ll know more in a couple of weeks.”

I nodded. Good. That was good, right?

We stepped out of the room together, Dominic’s hand hovering near my back, not touching, but close enough that I felt it anyway. Like he was there. Ready. Just in case I needed him.

The hallway felt brighter than before, louder somehow, even though nothing had really changed. Or maybe I

had.

We walked towards the exit in silence, neither of us speaking. I wasn’t sure what to say. What was there to say?

That tiny shape on the screen had felt like everything and nothing all at once. Real. But not fully. Hopeful. But also fragile.

My thoughts were still tangled in that contradiction when we stepped outside.

And then-“Dominic!”

The voice cut through everything sharp and familiar.

My body stilled instantly. For a second, I thought I’d imagined it. But no, before I could even process it, she was there.

Alessia.

She moved quickly, almost running towards us, her expression filled with something that looked dangerously close to relief.

Then, she reached him and wrapped her arms around him tightly. Like she belonged there. Like it was natural. Like it was expected.

My breath caught.

Everything inside me went still. Cold.

I didn’t move. Didn’t speak.

I just stood there, watching, stunned beyond belief as the moment unfolded right in front of me.
