Chapter 200
Isabella’s POV

By the time I got home, my hands were still cold. It didn’t really make sense. The drive had been long enough. The walk from the car to the building had been normal. Nothing out of place. Nothing unusual.
And yet, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something had shifted, like a line had been crossed.
The moment I stepped inside, the familiar sounds of the house wrapped around me-Caterina in the kitchen, her voice carrying as she argued with Maria about something that smelled faintly of garlic and herbs, Mateo’s laughter echoing from the living room.
Everything was normal. Safe.
I stood there for a second longer than necessary, trying to believe it.
“Mama!” Mateo ran towards me the moment he saw me, throwing his arms around my waist.
I froze for half a second, but then immediately crouched down, pulling him close.
“Hey,” I said softly, brushing his hair back as I looked at him more carefully than I ever had before, bit too carefully.
“Did you have fun today?” I asked.
“Yes! Nonna made pasta
and-”
‘Who were you playing with?” I interrupted.
He blinked. “Just Maria and Nonna. And I played downstairs.”
‘Downstairs where?”
‘In the building,” he said slowly, confusion creeping into his voice. “Why?”
‘Did anyone talk to you?” I pressed. “Anyone you didn’t know?”
He pulled back slightly now, frowning. “No….” A beat. “Mama, what happened?”
I forced a small smile, realising that I was scaring him all my questioning. But I just couldn’t get the thought of Alessia or someone she sent spying on us out of my mind. What if they spied on Mateo when I wasn’t around? What if they approached him and did something?
Before today, I hadn’t thought of Alessia as a physical threat. But her words, the way she had that keyring, it had definitely changed my perspective.
“Nothing,” I said to Mateo. “I was just asking.”
But he didn’t look convinced. And I hated that. I hated that I was putting that look on his face.
“I’m going to go change,” I said, standing up before I could make it worse.
As I moved towards my room, I could feel it again, that unease, that quiet, creeping fear.
At the park. Her voice echoed in my head. It hadn’t left my mind since she’d come to my office, acting like she owned the place right before Dominic had come and taken her away.

He had already texted me he would be coming to the office today, so I’d been prepared for that. But Alessia? That was so out of left field that it had been hours since her visit and I still hadn’t been able to shake off the creepy feeling her words had left behind.
Dominic hadn’t reached out to me since he left with her. But I knew he would soon. And I wasn’t sure if I was ready to face him just yet.
I shook my head as I placed my bag on the side table and moved towards my wardrobe, looking for clothes to change into.
I had just grabbed my clothes when there was a knock on the door.
“Isa?”
Dominic.
I closed my eyes briefly, not now. Not after today.
“Come in,” I said anyway, knowing I couldn’t avoid him forever.
The door opened, and he stepped inside, his presence immediately filling the space, tense, controlled, something darker sitting just beneath the surface.
His eyes found mine instantly. “Are you okay?”
I let out a quiet breath. “I’m fine.”
He didn’t believe me.
“I’m sorry,” he said immediately. “About today. She shouldn’t have come there. I didn’t-”
“She’s not just coming to my office, Dominic.” My voice cut through his apology before he could finish.
He stopped. “What?”
“She’s keeping tabs on us.”
Silence.
I walked past him towards the desk, picking up my bag and pulling out the keychain before holding it out to him.
“She brought this,” I said. “She said she found it at the park I’d gone to with Mateo.”
His jaw tightened. “That’s not possible,” he said.
“Isn’t it?” I snapped, turning to face him fully now. “Because she had it, Dominic. Mateo lost it yesterday. And today, she walks into my office with it like it’s nothing.”
He didn’t respond immediately, didn’t deny it this time. Which somehow made it worse.
“What does it mean?” I demanded. “What exactly is going on?”
“I’ll handle it,” he said.
I laughed. A short, disbelieving sound. “Of course you will.”
“Isa-”

“No,” I cut him off, shaking my head. “No, I’m done with that answer.”
My chest was rising and falling faster now, the words spilling out before I could stop them.

“This is exactly what I was afraid of,” I said. “This-this chaos you bring into my life every time you get involved.”
His expression hardened slightly. “I’m trying to protect you—”
“From what?” I shot back. “From your own fiancée?”
The word landed sharp, ugly and real. But I was done sugarcoating things..
“You need to put her on a leash, Dominic,” I said, my voice rising now, anger and fear tangling together. “Because this is not normal. This is not okay. She doesn’t get to walk into my life like this and start-” My voice broke slightly, and I hated that it did.
“She knew where we go to play,” I said more quietly. “Do you understand that? She knew.”
Silence.
The kind that pressed into your chest.
“I don’t feel safe,” I admitted.
And that was the truth I hadn’t wanted to say out loud.
Something shifted in his expression then. Something darker. Something almost dangerous.
“I’ll fix it,” he said.
I shook my head. “No.” A pause. “No, you won’t.”
Because he couldn’t, not completely. Not while she was still there, still in his life, still his fiancée.
“You need to go,” I said.
His brows drew together. “What?”
“You need to leave,” I repeated, my voice steadier now, even though everything inside me felt anything but.
“Isa-”
“Go,” I said, louder this time.
He didn’t move, didn’t even look like he was considering it. “I’m not leaving you like this.”
“You already did,” I snapped.
That landed. I saw it. But I didn’t stop.
“Every time you come into my life, this happens,” I continued, my voice shaking now, but I pushed through it anyway. “Tension. Fear. Uncertainty. I can’t do this again, Dominic. I won’t. I have a child to think about.” My hand moved instinctively to my stomach. “And another one on the way. I can’t live like this,” I said.
And I meant it. I really did.
