I couldn’t stop pacing as I waited for Dominic to get back home. The house itself felt way too silent without him here.
The atmosphere felt tense, like it was holding its breath.
Mateo was already asleep, his soft snores drifting through the baby monitor on my nightstand. I paced at the edge of my bed, phone in my hand, checking the time for the fifth time in as many minutes.
He should have been home by now.
I told myself Dominic had done this a hundred times. That he was careful. That he knew what he was doing.
But that didn’t stop my chest from tightening every time a car passed outside.
The Vitellis had taken the bait because of me.
That thought refused to leave me alone. I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about it ever since I’d sent that message yesterday. While it had taken my mind off of the whole Alessia thing, thinking about this wasn’t any better.
When I finally heard the front door open, I was on my feet before I even realized I’d moved.
Footsteps sounded. Too heavy. Slow.
My stomach dropped.
I ran down the hallway and skidded to a stop when I saw him in the living room.
Dominic was leaning against the wall, jacket halfway off.
And there was blood on his shirt.
“Oh my God-”
He looked up at the sound of my voice, surprised. “Isa.”
I crossed the room in seconds. “You’re hurt.”
“It’s nothing.”
“You’re bleeding,” I shot back, hands already shaking as I reached for him. “Sit down.”
He tried to argue, but I was already pulling him towards the couch.
Guilt slammed into me so hard I could barely breathe.

This was my fault.
Because I sent that message.
Because I played their game.
I grabbed the first-aid kit from the cabinet with trembling fingers and knelt in front of him.
“Where?” I whispered.

He hesitated, then tugged his shirt aside. A long, ugly cut sliced across his upper arm. It wasn’t deep enough to be life-threatening, but it was deep enough to make my heart twist.
“Jesus.” My throat closed as I examined the cut with dried blood crusted around it.
“Hey,” he said gently. “I’m okay.”
I pressed a cloth to the wound anyway, biting back tears. “You’re bleeding because of me.”
“No,” he said firmly. “I’m bleeding because I do dangerous work.”
“But they came because of the information I gave them.”
“They came because they’re my enemies,” he replied. “That’s what enemies do.”
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
My hands shook as I cleaned the cut. He winced when the antiseptic touched it.
“Sorry,” I murmured.
“I’ve had worse.”
“Don’t joke about that.”
A faint smile tugged at his mouth. “You’re adorable when you’re angry.”
I glared at him through wet lashes. “You’re not allowed to get hurt.”
He laughed softly. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
When I finished bandaging his arm, I stayed kneeling there, my forehead resting against his knee, trying to steady myself.
“I thought…” My voice broke. “I thought something really bad had happened.”
His other hand came down gently on my hair. “I came back to you. That’s what matters.”
I didn’t trust myself to speak.

So instead. I wrapped my arms around him and held on.
He stiffened for half a second before melting into it, one arm curling around my back.

“Wow,” he murmured. “If I’d known getting stabbed earned me hugs like this, I would’ve done it long ago.”
“Don’t you dare,” I whispered fiercely into his chest. “You don’t get to joke about that.”
“I’m serious,” he said quietly. “I like this.”
I pulled back just enough to look at him. “You can have hugs every day. You don’t need to bleed for them.”
Something soft flickered in his eyes.
Then he leaned down and kissed me.
The kiss wasn’t careful or hesitant.
It was desperate and warm and full of everything we weren’t saying. His hand slid to my waist, pulling me closer, and my heart felt like it might burst out of my ribs.
I kissed him back before I could stop myself.
God, I missed him.
The way he tasted.
The way he made me feel like I was the only thing in the world.
For a moment, I forgot everything else.
Then Alessia’s pictures flashed through my mind.
Him and her. Tangled together.
My chest tightened.
I broke the kiss, breathless. “Dominic, you need to rest.”
His forehead dropped against mine. “I’d rather stay right here.”
“You’ve had a night from hell,” I said softly. “You’re hurt. You’re exhausted.”
“I can still handle you,” he teased.
I managed a shaky smile. “I’m sure you can. But I want you alive and not feverish tomorrow.”
He studied me for a moment, then nodded. “Fine. But I’m sleeping with you.”
I blinked. “What?”

“To keep the nightmares away,” he said seriously. “It’s medical.”
I rolled my eyes despite myself. “You’re ridiculous.”
“You’re agreeing.”
I hesitated, then sighed. “Fine. But don’t get any ideas.”
His grin was wicked. “No promises.”
We moved towards the bedroom together.
And as I walked beside him, I couldn’t stop the ache in my chest.
Because I loved him.
And loving Dominic Russo had always been the most dangerous thing in my life.
