Isabella’s POV

When I woke up the next morning, I was in an extremely happy mood, ready to take on the world.

No problem felt too big, no issue too large to not be resolved.

In fact, even the whole Alessia thing didn’t seem like too big of an issue right then. I knew that sitting around and doing nothing wasn’t going to do me any good. If I wanted to get to the truth, I had to do something about this myself.

And, I’d already thought of the first step I was going to take in that regard.

I couldn’t ask Dominic if the child was his, but I could ask him who he thought the kid’s father was. It would at least give me a little bit clue about this whole thing.

The question had been sitting on my tongue since morning.

We were still in my bedroom, sunlight spilling through the tall windows, painting the sheets in a pale gold. Mateo was still asleep in his room. Dominic sat propped against the headboard, his bandaged arm resting awkwardly on his lap, eyes on his phone.

He looked normal. Too normal for what I was going to ask him. Too normal for how nervous I was as to what his reaction to my question would be.

“Dominic,” I said softly.

He glanced up. “Yeah?”

I hesitated, my heartbeat thudding loudly in

my

chest.

“Who’s the father of Alessia’s baby?”

The words landed between us like a dropped plate.

For a second, I wondered if I’d gone too far. If I’d just shattered the fragile peace we’d only just started rebuilding again.

But Dominic didn’t react the way I expected.

He frowned slightly. Not defensively. Not guiltily. Just confused.

“We never really talked about it,” he said after a moment. “She just told me it was a one-night stand that went wrong.”

I blinked.

“That’s it?”

He nodded slowly. “Yeah. Honestly, I didn’t even know she did things like that until she told me. But-” he gave a small, awkward shrug “-to each their own, I guess.”

Something in his expression told me he wasn’t lying. There was no guilt, no hint of deception.

Only discomfort at the situation.

“The guy’s not in the picture,” he continued. “I don’t even know who he is. Alessia didn’t want an abortion, so she’s keeping the baby. And I’m just trying to help however I can.”

He rubbed a hand over his face, then looked at me, eyes serious. “I know I’ve fucked up in the past. God knows I have. But I’m trying to be better now. I’m trying to be present.”

The sincerity in his gaze nearly knocked the breath out of me.

He wasn’t hesitating.

He wasn’t stumbling over his words.

He wasn’t watching my reaction the way liars do.

If he was lying, he was terrifyingly good at it.

But this didn’t feel like a lie to me.

And yet, those pictures kept flashing in front of my mind’s eye.

Something still didn’t sit right.

“I see,” I murmured.

Dominic studied my face. “Why are you asking?”

I forced a small smile. “Nothing, just curious.”

He didn’t push. Which somehow made it worse.

A few moments later, I pushed myself off the bed. “It’s Sunday,” I said. “Let me make breakfast today.”

He blinked. “You’re volunteering?”

I smiled despite myself. “Yes.”

“Well, now I feel spoiled.”

“You should,” I teased. “You were very brave last night.”

He laughed softly. “If bravery gets me breakfast in bed, I might start picking more fights.”

Before I could reply, Mateo burst into the room, hair wild, eyes bright.

“Mamma!”

I stilled. This was the first time Mateo was seeing a man in my bed. And not just any man but Dominic, someone he knew and had grown much too close to in the past few days.

But Mateo didn’t even bat an eyelash at that. He simply jumped onto the bed right next to Dominic as if it was an everyday thing.

Dominic turned, smiling at Mateo lovingly. “Hey, champ.”

Mateo’s gaze immediately went to Dominic’s arm. “What happened?”

Dominic hesitated. “I fell.”

Mateo’s eyes widened. “Did it hurt?”

“A little,” Dominic admitted. “But your mom’s making me special breakfast, so I’ll survive.”

Mateo gasped. “Special breakfast?”

“Yes,” I said. “So go brush your teeth.”

He ran off without another word, and I stared after him for a moment, marveling at how normal all of this felt to him. This definitely made things easier for when I told him about Dominic being his real father.

Then, I headed for the kitchen, but my thoughts were far from food. They circled back to the conversation I’d had with Dominic moments ago.

Dominic hadn’t lied. Not in any way I could see.

But Alessia had shown me something too real to ignore.

If she was lying, why?

And if she wasn’t, then why was Dominic?

Either way, I couldn’t let this go.

Not now.

Not when everything was finally starting to feel almost right.

I needed the truth.

And if Dominic couldn’t give it to me, I would have to get it from Alessia. I had to go and talk to her to find more answers. And I wouldn’t rest until I had the whole truth.
