That evening, Dominic came back just before sunset.
I knew it before I saw him, before the low murmur of voices near the entrance, before the subtle shift in the house that always followed him. The air seemed to settle when he was home, like the walls themselves paid attention.
Mateo noticed it too.
“Dominic is back,” he announced from the dining table, where he was meticulously lining up his cutlery. “I heard the door.”
“You hear everything,” I said, smiling despite myself as I set the plates down.
“That’s because I’m very obser–observant,” he replied seriously, fumbling a little on the big word. I smiled at that. He had always been a keen learner, picking up on new vocabulary and using it in sentences quickly enough.
Dominic appeared in the doorway a moment later, jacket already off, sleeves rolled up. His gaze found mine first like it always did these days before softening when it dropped to Mateo.
“There you are,” he said. “I was starting to think you’d decided school was optional.”
Mateo grinned. “Mom says it’s not.”
“She’s wise,” Dominic said, ruffling his hair as he passed. Mateo tolerated it for exactly two seconds before squirming away.
Dinner was easy.
Too easy, maybe.
Mateo talked about a science project involving volcanoes and glue, and Dominic listened like it was the most important briefing of his day, asking questions, offering suggestions that made Mateo puff up with pride.
I watched them from across the table, my chest tight with a feeling I didn’t quite trust yet.
“So,” I said lightly, pushing food around my plate, “how’s Alessia feeling now?”
Dominic didn’t miss a beat. “Better. She rested most of the afternoon. She went to the doctor during the day. They think it was stress.”
Of course it was.
“That’s good,” I said, keeping my tone neutral. I didn’t look at him when I added, “I’m glad you checked on her.”

His gaze flicked to me briefly, something unreadable passing through his eyes before Mateo interrupted.
“Is she sick–sick?” Mateo asked.
“No,” Dominic said gently. “Just tired.”
Mateo nodded, satisfied. “I get tired too when I think too much.”
I snorted. Dominic smiled.
After dinner, I walked Mateo upstairs, listening to his running commentary about volcanoes until I tucked him into bed. He curled on his side, already half–asleep.
“Goodnight, Mom,” he murmured.
I kissed his forehead. “Goodnight, my love.”
When I stepped back into the hallway, Dominic was waiting.
“We need to talk,” he said.
My stomach dipped, not with fear exactly, but anticipation. I didn’t think the words ‘we need to talk‘ ever made anyone feel better about the conversation that was about to come next.
We went to my room. The lights were low, the curtains drawn. That was when I noticed the bag sitting on my bed, sleek, black, and unfamiliar.
“What’s that?” I asked, moving towards it.
“Wait,” Dominic said, catching my wrist gently. “Let me talk first.”
I stilled.
Okay.
He took a breath, rare and deliberate. “I’ve been thinking about what the Vitellis want from you.”
I crossed my arms, my pulse quickening, “I was hoping you would.”
“They want visibility,” he continued. “They want to see you at my side. In meetings. In public. They want proof you’re doing what they asked.”
“And you think giving them that will make them back off?” I asked.
“I think it will make them think they’re winning,” he said. “And people who think they’re winning get careless,”
I considered that before nodding slowly.
“I have a meeting tomorrow night,” he went on. “Some people are coming in from France. If the Vitellis are watching, and we know they are, they’ll see you with me when you come with me. It tells them you’re doing as they asked.”

…
“And if the meeting goes well?” I asked.
“The alliance with the French brings us one step closer to removing them entirely.”
I didn’t hesitate. “Okay.”

Relief flickered across his face, but it was short lived. Then, he reached into his jacket and pulled out something small, dark.
A gun.
He placed it in my palm before I could react.
My breath caught, not because of fear, but because of what this meant.
“I want you to have this,” he said. “You won’t need it. You’ll be surrounded. But meetings like this very rarely might get violent. I’ll be with you every step of the way, but I’ll rest easier knowing you have it.”
I looked at the gun, then back at him. There was no demand in his expression. No command. Just concern.
I closed my fingers around it. “Alright.”
Only then did I turn back to the bag. “Can I open it now?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
Inside was a dress.
Black, sleek, cut to command attention without begging for it. The fabric looked like silk but heavier, structured enough to move with intention. The neckline dipped just enough to be daring, the back low, and elegant. Matching heels nestled beside it, along with understated jewelry, nothing loud, everything deliberate, just the way I liked it.
It was beautiful.
“For tomorrow,” Dominic said. “I want you to wear it.”
I swallowed, emotions rising unexpectedly. “You planned this.”
“I plan everything,” he said lightly. Then, with a glint in his eye, “I’ll wear a matching shirt. So the world knows who I belong to.”
Heat crept up my neck. He was clearly teasing me about last night. I both hated and loved it a little too much.
“Dominic,” I said, shaking my head.
He smiled, not smug, but certain.
It made something warm bloom in my chest, even as another part of me stayed guarded.
Because as much as I wanted to believe this meant stability, me at his side, included, and chosen, I still hadn’t

cleared the shadow hanging over us.
Alessia.
The pregnancy.
The truth.
I closed the bag gently and met his gaze.
Tomorrow, I’d stand beside him. Play my part. Walk into his world openly.
But before I let myself believe in what we were becoming. I needed answers.
And I was ready to do whatever it took to get them.
