His Regret Arrived Three Days Late novel Chapter 1

Annika Sargent was finally pregnant with Conrad Beryl’s child. She tried calling him, but the phone just rang unanswered. Filled with joy, she prepared a special dinner, a table laden with all his favorite dishes, and waited for him to come home.

Darkness fell outside, and eventually, she curled up on the sofa and drifted off to sleep. In a hazy stupor, she heard the midnight bells chime, followed by the sound of footsteps.

“You’re home?” Annika jolted awake, taking the coat from his shoulders to hang it up.

The man glanced at the elaborate meal on the table, his expression as cold as the night outside. A mocking smile touched his lips. “So, you remembered what day it is.”

“What?” Annika hadn’t quite heard him. “The food’s cold. I’ll go heat it up.”

“Don’t bother. I’ve already eaten.” He loosened his tie, opened his briefcase, and pulled out a document. He held it out to her, his long fingers stark against the white paper.

The words ‘Divorce Agreement’ seared into her vision, making her pupils constrict. The smile froze on her lips. “You… you want a divorce?” she asked, her voice trembling.

“Isn’t this what you wanted?”

He began unfastening his cufflinks as he headed upstairs. Annika hurried after him. “Conrad, I…”

Before she could finish, he cut her off, his face etched with exhaustion. “You don’t love me, and I don’t love you. We agreed on that when we got married two years ago. The contract is up today. I have a business trip tonight, so there’s no need for a farewell dinner.”

He disappeared into the bathroom to shower.

Annika stood at the door, her face drained of all color, her fingertips trembling uncontrollably.

This past year, she had endured countless medications and injections just to conceive his child. And now that she had finally succeeded, he was leaving her.
