Cradling the baby, Yazmin couldn't get enough of him.
"Annika, look at him," she said, her voice filled with adoration. "He inherited all the best features from you and Conrad. This child will be even more handsome and brilliant than his father."
Annika didn't know what to say, so she remained silent. "Wow, my nephew is so beautiful!" Estelle chirped, entering with a bouquet of flowers. She handed the bouquet to Lana and tried to take the baby from Yazmin. But Yazmin wasn't ready to let go, so Estelle had to settle for standing beside her, cooing over Monroe.
"Annika, what's his name?" Yazmin asked.
"I call him Monroe," Annika replied.
Yazmin thought for a moment. "Then let's call him Monroe Beryl."
"Mom, Annika, let me tell you," Estelle began, eager to take credit with an ulterior motive. "If it weren't for me, my little nephew might really be gone. I knew that crazy Yelena was up to no good. If I hadn't run into her by chance that day and followed her, then secretly swapped Monroe with a similar-looking baby, he might have…"
"Monroe needs to be fed. Lana, go prepare his lunch," Yazmin instructed as the baby started to fuss. Not wanting to keep her grandson from his meal, Yazmin reluctantly handed him back to Annika. "Annika," she said, her tone serious, "this is a Beryl. You must take good care of him. We can't have another incident like this. My old heart can't take the shock."
As if fearing Yazmin would bring up custody, Annika held the baby tighter. "Don't worry, Yazmin. Monroe is my son. I will protect him, care for him, and give him my all."
Annika stressed the words "protect him," her gaze flickering meaningfully toward Estelle—a silent warning.
