"You should come more often." David tried to keep Eli from leaving.
Eli turned around. "Why?"
David straightened his back slightly and said with a relaxed smile, "Because it turns out you're useful."
Eli immediately scrunched up her nose. "Useful?" Eli ended up laughing. "I'm not your assistant."
"I know." David chuckled, then looked at her again. "But you're reliable. Talking to you about the game is actually pretty enjoyable, Eli."
Eli did not answer. However, without realizing it, a faint smile appeared on her face.
David watched her for a few moments. For the first time, he felt that the girl he had initially considered nothing more than a challenge was actually far more interesting than he had imagined.
The words made Eli fall silent for a moment. She did not know why such a simple compliment felt so pleasant.
After that, David asked Eli to watch his games more often. At first, Eli thought it was simply David's way of asking for support for his team, but over time, she began to realize that David did not always need her to talk about basketball.
Sometimes David asked Eli for her opinion about their game. Sometimes he simply wanted Eli to be in the stands and made sure that she really came. Even after the game was over, David would often look for her first before meeting up with his teammates.
That attention gradually made Eli grow accustomed to David's presence.
David sent her messages more and more often just to ask whether Eli had eaten. When Eli studied too long in the library, David would show up with a drink and tell her to take a break. When Eli complained about her piling assignments, David would try to cheer her up in simple ways.
None of it was truly special, but to Eli, that kind of attention felt nice.
David also never made her feel different simply because Eli was known as a full-scholarship recipient. He never took issue with Eli's simple appearance or her habit of carrying books everywhere. Instead, David seemed to enjoy Eli's calm personality and the fact that she was not demanding.
And it had to be admitted, David was indeed a man who was hard to ignore.
